I've always liked The Bearded Baker. Whenever we head up to Edinburgh, we go straight there for buns and coffee, but now it was time to try 71 Steps. We arrived at 1030ish, the staff all smiled and said hello, asking if we were staying or after a takeaway. We were seated straight away (two adults, two kids and a dog) at one of the window tables. They brought us water to the table and allowed us to have a look at the menus, then came back after about two minutes for our order. My wife went for the waffles, kids both had bagels (they were being picky so one had bacon and the other just wanted butter) and I went all out with a cinnamon bun and a doughnut. We also asked for a double espresso, a black coffee and a hot chocolate. Took about five minutes for the food and drinks to come to the table. It was all fantastic. Everyone tucked into my doughnut (which I knew they would, hence the additional cinnamon bun). The doughnut was a special rhubarb and custard with a white chocolate glaze. I cannot extol enough how fabulous this doughnut was. Just amazing! The cinnamon bun was also excellent as they always are. I couldn't try my wife's waffles as I'm allergic to banana but she said they were terrific and she cleaned the plate. The kids loved their bagels too, so much that we had to get some more to take back for tea (as well as another bun and a slab of focaccia). They have done a great job getting this new place set up and feeling so friendly and welcoming. The staff were great with the kids, always with a smile on their face. Thanks so much and well done again on a great venue.

If you love bagels, coffee, and a cosy atmosphere, then 71 Steps on Rodney Street is a must-visit. This new cafe has already made a splash in the neighbourhood, and I can see why. The first thing that struck me was the coffee – surprisingly good for a place I primarily expected great bagels from. I opted for the daily special "beggel" (an egg baked right into the centre of the bagel), which came with a tasty little side salad. It was fresh, flavorful, and hit the spot. Don't skip the baked goods either – the pistachio brownie was massive and incredibly satisfying. 71 Steps has a bright, welcoming space with a clean, modern feel. I love that you can peek into the kitchen and see everything being prepped. While it can get crowded near the entrance, the staff handles it with friendly efficiency. I noticed they were great about accommodating different needs, too. Understandably, things are still settling in as it's a brand-new spot. My only slight critique is that service could be a bit faster, especially for a lunchtime crowd. That said, the staff were clearly experienced and working hard, so I'm confident this will improve with time. Overall, 71 Steps is a fantastic addition to Canonmills. The combination of a thoughtfully designed space, delicious food, and warm service makes it stand out. I'm excited to become a regular and explore the rest of their menu!

Of course I’m a bagel snob, I was born in New York. After 3+ years of living in Edinburgh I have accepted the fact that people insist on filling their bagels here with all kinds of strange things (square sausages? Haggis?), but I’ve still not managed to find a bagel sandwich where the bagel itself is actually good. Enter: Seventy One Steps. The fillings of the “ultimate beggel” were delicious. An oozy egg, perfectly cooked bacon, tattie scones (again, we are in Scotland), melted cheese, and a tangy tomato chutney. All stuffed within a soft but robust sesame bagel. Yum. The space was also beautifully appointed, the coffee was great, and service was prompt and polite. I’ll be back to try more bagels and the other delicious baked goods on offer.
