Thantawan Thai Edinburgh — Restaurant in City of Edinburgh

Super disappointed! Pros:

1. Attentive staff
2. Affordable price for reasonably delicious authentic Thai food.

Cons:

1. Green curry was too salty, crispy pork belly was not crispy, Thai milk tea was too sweet, sticky rice was not cooked completely...
2. We ordered green curry with chicken, but were given fish instead.... Something to look out for if you have seafood allergy (MAKE SURE to let the staff know!).

Had superb experience with them first time round, but not today. Probably their chef was having a bad day....

1. We don't think that your staffs have offered to make a brand new one for us. Also, we are in a rush (as communicated to your staff), so even if your staffs did offer to make a brand new one, that would not solve the problem. The same applies to the other food - we don't have another 15-20 minutes to wait for new food. From our perspective, it is important for your chef to get the taste right in the first attempt without the need for customers to remind your chef that the curry is too salty or the pork is not crispy.

2. Regarding allergies, we appreciated that your staff communicated it very clearly at outset. However, we did not expect to see fish in the green curry (although we were told that it was chicken but it clearly wasn't - we could tell the difference of texture between chicken and fish).

With that being said, we are very grateful that your staff have been very helpful and try to make our dining experience as pleasant as possible. We all agreed that this could be an one-off error, and we believed that your chef could definitely make things right the next time. We truly enjoyed your food the first time we had it, and we will definitely try again...

Just had a highly disappointing experience!

I used to live across the road and would come there often and it used to be nice. But today my partner and I came in and it was freezing cold inside, I convinced my partner to stay as I knew the food will be good.

As the food started being cooked for us and for other takeaway orders, the place got covered in a cloud of smoke.

All our clothes full of the smell now. This smell penetrated everything I couldn’t even enjoy my meal because of the smell.

The quality of food felt cheap! Nothing what I remember. Pad Thai way too sweet and the soup flavourless.

The whole place felt run down, humid, tables wet and cold…

The bathroom is super tiny you can barely fit in.

To top it all off we got charged £4 extra pounds for bringing our kambucha cans with us (which they do not sell!), without any verbal warning prior.

Your pettiness just lost you a customer.

It was so terrible I will NEVER come back again and tell others not to.

Worst...

The beef is drier and rougher than my life and it's not spicy at all so perhaps the 🌶️🌶️🌶️ is just for British people 🧐?!

I don't think the crispy pork belly is a good ingredient with Pad Thai, but it’s not too bad, it's just not impressive at all, especially for a dish sold for £17.55. It definitely doesn't deserve this price. I would rather go for the prawn version which is cheaper at £14.95.

The Tom Yum vegetable soup, on the other hand, tastes quite nice, so I decided to give 3 stars to this restaurant overall.

When I first got into the restaurant there was a very irritating spicy smoke that makes everyone cough very hard for a few minutes, but I quite like it actually.

The stools are those high stools that are not comfortable and there's no place for me to put my belongings. I ended up having to put everything on the tiny sticker table.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, and I probably will never...
