Mmmmmm..... I booked Under the Table based on the 4.9 Google review score.
It was ok. The menu wasn't especially varied, and had it been available online rather than the 'sample menu' (which is pretty good), we might not have considered it.
A couple of things that weren't great:
• It was extremely noisy... Probably down to the fact there were quite a few large groups of people in there. A lot of shrieking. And I mean a lot! Not exactly a calm, relaxing environment. More like being in a Wetherspoon's with a load of people out on the lash.
• Our waitress forgot to put our dessert order through to the kitchen. Ok...fine. Mistakes are made. Her colleague couldn't wait to throw her under the bus and blame her when we asked when we could expect our dessert. Nice!!?? It was a good 20-25 minutes wait.
So... The shrieking can't be avoided and I don't know if that's a regular thing, so let's park that. Could've just been a one-off noisy evening.
The forgetting to put an order through... Mistakes are made. Nobody is perfect! But it's how you deal with the mistake that makes all the difference.
I work in hospitality. If mistakes are made by staff, we would do one of 2 things: Knock an amount off the bill to reflect the mistake. In this case, the cost of the desserts. or... Offer a drink on the house by way of an apology. Token gestures guaranteed to keep your customer...
Read moreI’ve been raving about this dinner!!! We talked about it walking all the way back to Waverley.
The service was super, a very warm welcome greeted us, we had some champagne as an aperitif , which was lovely, and a little amuse bouche.
To start, I had red legged partridge with put lentils and my friend had and onion tart with goats’ cheese. Both were excellent, very well seasoned and cooked perfectly. We paired with with a lovely Grüner Veltliner.
We both opted for the Venison with Red Cabbage for main courses, again really, really good well balanced flavours, the venison was cooked perfectly, very tender and delicious. We had the most perfect mash on the side. We also had carrots with miso and Szechuan peppers. At first I thought the Szechuan was a little too overpowering, but it was okay. We paired this with a delicious Barbera.
And oh my!!! The tarte tatin… absolutely divine!!!! My friend had the treacle tart and said it was delicious, but she did have plate envy. I had a glass of PX with the tarte tatin.
With a tip we were £90 a head, which I think is very fair for the quality of food and service we received. I’d definitely recommend...
Read moreA fantastic lunch spot. The atmosphere was very thoughtful, calm and quaint. The interior is welcoming and the five of us settled in quickly. The set menu was reasonable but full of intrigue with specialist ingredients added to classic components like the salmon and dicon salad. I went for the Sardinian bread with parma ham and it was delicious. This was followed by a beef bourguignon that was very rich and scrumptious, the pickled and sauteed shallots added a terrific tartness to balance out the deep flavor of the beef. We had sides of creamy mashed potatoes, spicy broccolini and green salad that accompanied the main course perfectly. The wine selection was also reasonable and the staff had great knowledge about accompaniments. The cheese course showcased the best of Scottish cheese, the waiter was happy to adjust the selection to offer some extra variety for 5 of us to share. Overall a top restaurant, excellent service, terrific food and great ambience. We have sampled most restaurants in Edinburgh during the fringe and this is a standout, we...
