Don't let this 1 star put u down if u can bare with the bartenders and staff especially evening shift . I go there literally everyday for breakfast as I'm from Brum and go cov uni. So no time for making breakfast at home . Excellent staff during day and noon . Few weeks ago our engineering group went after assignment 13 of us only 7 of em drink . So tab was on me .I Spent 500 pounds in space of 2 hours now the reason for 1, perfect environment perfect music hip hop pop rock mix . Now my class mates were already there,i entered Phoenix went to bar asked my mates who wanted what now about to order the bartender was standing free I go excuse me he goes can't u see I'm busy he was busy on phone. U cant miss him on evenings wearing glasses long hair ,tattoeed.constant drinking every 10 mins .after a while he goes yes what's ur order I ordered 21 tequila to start off with. He goes I need to see 21 id's and are 21 people pay8ng #made him understand 7 of us showed id's . He goes payment first then he will put which to some extent is understandable . 3 per person down ordered 14 more asks for money again and is waiting . Now they weren't doing that with everyone else .down ordered 10 more ordered food ordered 10 double jacks would have spent another 500 without hesitation when we got a bit tipsy cuz all are heavy drinkers . I was looking like a wild animal grown beard no trim just a cap . AT the end the bartender goes people like u usually cause trouble I'm Asian and I told him since we have been here everyone's been gett8ng one beer for 1 hour wearing fancy clothes . And thank God I had enough in account to buy everything in there by Grace of god.But wasn't wearing fancy at that time .. showed him keys of my x5m parked outside with Amg key in my key chain . U be the judge long review because I was hurt and I mean really hurt and u be the judge to go again or no .just because I was trained not to show off and brown means I won't pay cuz that were his words in the end . Still good people and environment was perfect. BUT NEVER GOING AGAIN .If your brown or black u defo have to wear fancy and need to show money funny...
Read moreFirst of all, I am a final year student, been there like 20 times. This time I had a UniCrew voucher and The Phoenix was listed on the website as place I can use my voucher. Went to the bar, showed the voucher with the QR code and the bartender (was a girl) tried to convince me they’re not accepting vouchers. I insisted so another bartender came and said they’re actually accepting those vouchers. Anyway, wanted a cocktail, the first girl said I can’t have a cocktail using it, I asked what I can get then. She replied “I don’t know, see the conditions” Couldn’t find any conditions but anyway, got a whiskey with coke and a cocktail I paid for. Have had this particular cocktail before, as I said I’ve been there many times. This time my cocktail had nothing in common with the previous times. Upset, I asked why’s that difference and the girl replied “It’s just different glass”. Well, I’m not stupid it wasn’t just the glass lol. Went there with my parents by the way, who came to visit me as I am EU student, so they were no less disappointed. I don’t know why I got that attitude, maybe because I didn’t seem “cool enough” as I was with my mom & dad or what?!?! Anyway, probably won’t go there again, not me, not my friends. In the end of the day, £15 for disgusting cocktail and unbothered attitude...
Read moreHaving been a customer here for near on 15-20 years I have just been agressively squared up to by a bouncer (to note - short asian, with short creamed back hair) for wearing a pair of leather flip-flops. He put his face physically and agrressivley into mine and said you are wearing slippers. His reaction was akin to responding to a serious violence, gun crime, or drug issue. I responded by saying why are you being aggressive and threatening with me if indeed I am wearing slippers? (which I was not). Irony is, I have entered this estblishement as a loyal cusomer for years, and in estimation this summer alone I have visited the pub in the same 'slippers' at least 20 times. 20 times 7 punds a pint is 140 pounds. Then add on the friends I brought in and repeat customer over 15-20 years. I think we are now looking at significants amount of money that will now not be going into the coffers of the Phoenix because of this agressive young Asian bouncer, and the word that will be spread amongst Coventry people will be very damaging. One final thought on this is, having known this pub for many years, why all of sudden does it think it command a dress code akin the Ritz....
