PHOENIX — Restaurant in East Devon

Absolutely disgusting service. I have never experienced anything so badly organised before. Was welcomed well and showed to a table. Didn't have chance to look at menu properly before asking if we were ready to order. At this point we were the only cutomers in the restaurant. There was two staff on duty. As we ordered our food a lady came in to order a takeaway. 5 minutes later a couple came in to eat. They ordered their food. The lady that ordered takeaway and the couple that arrived after us were given their food before we even received our starters. The waitress then came with a tray of food none of which we had ordered, it should of been wrapped up for a delivery. The chef came out of the kitchen to speak to the staff about the food that was delivery but put down as our table. The delivery driver arrived and there was more confusion with orders. Eventually we received our starter which looked like the wan tons had been cooked then put in the oven to keep warm. The other couple had received their dessert before this. At this point another couple arrived to sit in and ordered. 1 hour after ordering the waitress then brought a tray and served our main meals. Which also was not what we ordered but the mains for the second couple that arrived after us. Then another member of staff came over to try and say that it was what we ordered. 3 stars overall, however some of the food deserves more and some less. We are on hols and I am sure we all have our favourite takeaways, even if it is in the next town of which we benchmark against. Positves: 5 star dishes. Duck in plum sauce, plenty of nicely cooked duck and a very tasty sauce. Sweet and Sour Chicken balls, large pieces of proper chicken in a ligt batter and plenty of them with a nice not to sweet sauce. Chips, perfectly cooked and good sized portion. 4 Stars: Chicken in Lemon sauce. Nice but a bit skingy with the sauce. 3 stars: Egg fried rice, ok, no egg?? 2 Star: House Chow Mein, Supposed to have mixed meats but struggled to find any other meats than chicken and beef and only a small amount among lots of noodles in a slimy dark soy sauce. Chicken chow Mein, in the same slimy soy sauce. Too much sauce in the chow meins. I would avoid the chow meins unless you like them slimy. 1 Star: Beef in black bean sauce. The beef was nicely cooked but the sauce was burnt and bitter, so not really edible. Also 1 star as no free prawn crackers on an order of nearly £50. Free prawn crackers is a given where I have had takeaways in various parts of the uk for this type of spend! First for me. Hit and miss really. Probably would not...

Visted tonight, read reviews before hand but thought lets try it. Starters and crispy duck excellent our crispy chilli beef came out with a sweet and sour sauce, but when mentioned with staff we were contradicted as they said " its the same" by one staff member, then another waitress came over to discuss issue, I asked her to take it up with manager, she went in kitchen but manager busy and would not come out and said thats how they cook it...I would have been happy to have dish re-cooked with some chilli in and a fresh rice but their option was to give the beef dish for free and 10 % off. Also no bottles of red wine in stock but when asked they let us go to Tesco to bring a bottle in.
