Becketts Coffee House — Restaurant in East Devon

What a wonderful place! It has a traditional ‘ladies who lunch’ vibe which reminded me of my favourite places from many years ago.

The manager, Helen, welcomed us in and, upon, hearing that one of the party was gluten-free & dairy-free and another was gluten-free (2 could eat regular food) she immediately gave us both the allergen menus (and the regular ones) and shared what GFDF options were available.

We ate: GFDF sausage roll, with coleslaw, crisps and salad, followed by GFDF Victoria sponge. -GFDF steak pasty, again with coleslaw, crisps and salad, followed by GFDF apple & blackberry crumble with GFDF custard. GF mozzarella & pesto panini with salad, followed by GF cappuccino cake. -Jacket potato with cheese, tuna & salad, followed by GF cappuccino cake.

We all found our choices delicious and as they were so similar to the ‘regular’ food that our two ‘regular’ eaters were very impressed with their GF and DF alternatives.

For a main, dessert and drink we paid approx £17 per person - very good value for the generous portions and yumminess!

Helen was so knowledgeable about allergies and allergens that she made this a fantastic holiday treat!...

We always come to Beckett's when visiting Sidmouth. Over time they have got better and better now serving even better coffee and a fantastic, unsurpassed range of cakes, scones and are particularly notable for their superbselection of food for people who need gluten free, dairy free and or vegetarian/vegan dietary compatible foods. The staff are always welcoming, highly pleasant and most professional. In addition in this modern day and age they provide free secure WiFi, which is unusual but makes life so much easier if you want to do secure banking or other stuff while relaxing over a drink and food. I love a flat white code and in a previous review of the cafe, commented that they weren't making it quite right; that had been rectified which puts them moist definetely to of the pops for everything. If I could taste above 5 stars I would without hesitation, but meanwhile they are 5 stars without...

Probably the worst beef pasty I have ever had. The top was soggy and the base as hard as iron (sure sign that it had been microwaved to heat it up). My mother in law had crab salad which included bits of shell! I made no complaint at the time as it was her treat and didn’t want to spoil her lunch out. It was busy but that does not mean that staff can’t be pleasant. The chap behind the counter, who I should imagine was the manager, rushed about as if in a panic causing other staff to seem miserable. This is the first time I have felt the need to publish my concerns and hopefully I won’t feel like this again. I see that many of the reviews are glowing so I hope that no one else has cause to give a bad review...
