We’ve been coming to the diner for almost 10 years and it has always been consistently amazing. The only one downfall is that it isn’t closer to home in Blackpool for us so we can visit more often than once a year. Going to try and squeeze in one more visit before we go home. As a party of 5 we all had something different and each dish was just perfect. You have to try this at least once on your visit to Paignton. Staff are so friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Menu is varied and you’ll be dying to go back to try something else. Will definitely be back next year to visit again in the new premises a short distance away without fail!
As google won’t allow you to add a second review I’ll edit this one for my most recent visit.
Was so excited to visit the new premises and was not left disappointed. Its new location stands out in the middle of town and looks very inviting. So nice to be greeted by familiar faces and meet new ones. The atmosphere inside was so welcoming with lots of murals of Nepal. The food was, as expected, 10/10. I’ve never been disappointed in the almost 10 years we have been visiting, having takeaways at first when on holiday to dining in. After the obligatory poppadoms and mixed pickle tray, husband and I had the Passanda with boiled rice, Nepalese Goat Curry with coconut rice and shared a keema naan, and all dishes were out of this world. Both husband and son love this coconut rice and haven’t found anywhere that creates anything close to how good it is. Portions sizes are super generous, super delicious and you can just tell they are freshly cooked with fresh ingredients. (Just check out and follow their social media for proof). Three pieces advice for visiting here 1) Book a table in advance. We visited mid-week and the restaurant was full, and have booked for our next trip to Paignton in summer already. 2) if you’re not sure what to have, ask for a recommendation; these guys know what they’re talking about. And finally, 3) did I mention to book! So nice to see the chef and Sanjay again and so happy the restaurant is doing so well. It is very deserved and as long as it is busy, it will stay open for all my future visits for years to come. Thanks to the expanding team for a super evening, where nothing was too much trouble. The only disappointing thing is that is it not closer to home so we can visit more often. See...
Read morePlease read this review in the light that we were late to the party so to speak. We had been out and about and only got to dinner quite late so made it just ahead of the kitchen closing which was a relief as we had selected the place specifically due to it's good reviews. Note they are stairs to go up to the restaurant. I didn't specially look if it was accessible so you would need to ask the restaurant directly if this is a requirement. The service was good, maybe too attentive as with children it just takes a while for decisions to be made as to what will be eaten.
We had the paneer and dumplings as well as popadoms for starters. Mixed grill for one child and chicken nuggets for the fussy child 😂 which she approved of. All the food came out at once again I think this was due to how late we were so we really had no pause between courses. We had Naan and pilau rice, I had the goat and my husband had chicken from the Nepalese options. They do come with the bone in, which they tell you before you order, so if this is not your thing, try something else. Everything tasted good. I did think the dumplings casing was a little thicker than my personal preference but tasty. Overall I felt a little rushed hence my statement at the start of the review. Other than that we were pleasantly surprised at the reasonable bill considering how much food we had. I would like to return at a more reasonable hour and eat leisurely. However would highly recommend and...
Read more2nd post : Responding to owner : no response has been made by yourself to my comments that the two dishes looked and tasted/exactly the same as per the photos attached, can you see them ? Is it normal that the 2 x dishes look/taste the same or do you accept a mistake was made. Your website states the Goan chicken contains tamarind sauce/coconut milk/yoghurt /garlic and ginger. The dish we received did not. Your website states Everest curry , contains chopped onion/green pepper,/tomato/ tibetan herb/spices. The dish we received did not. Both were exactly the same look at the photos. I suspect you/your chef, just reheated some base gravy and threw some chicken in, thinking we were holidaymakers who would never be seen/heard again. The issue is about the quality of your food , not about our taste buds. 1st post: We are locals, this was our first time ordering at Gurkha's Diner and will be our last. We were extremely disappointed with our takeaway from Gurkha's Diner which was so awful we never managed to eat it all. By far the worst takeaway we have ever had. We ordered 2 x Nepalese starters which were ok'ish and 1 x Goan curry and 1 x Everest curry. Both curry's tasted exactly the same . Please see photo the sauces from both dishes look identical!!!!!! The curries had an overpowering taste which was really unpleasant. The few pieces of chicken tikka? that was in the curry was awful it was dry...
