We live locally to Hanbury's, have heard that it's good so thought we would finally give it a try...I always try the chips first, as a test, I'm glad we did as I will never go back... they were average at best, far to crisp (a long chip should bend if held at the end not stay rigid) and not fluffy on the inside... no real flavour, very bland. A good chip does not need salt and vinegar to be tasty it just enhances it... I ordered large and regular size portions expecting them to fill the boxes but no, the large could easily of for into the regular box and it cost over £7 for what was basically 3 large potatoes cut and over fried.. to say we were underwhelmed and disappointed is an understatement... when we get fish and chips at babbacombe we will get them from the one in St Mary Church Road as normal, far better value for money... so a hanburys large fish and large chips is basically £15, double what I normally pay and for a below...
Read moreGreat food, fantastic staff, great ambiance. Just a shame our evening was somewhat spoilt by a grockle who liked to hear the sound of his own voice. It's some trick being able to eat a beautiful piece of line caught haddock whilst breathing and continually talking so loudly that the whole place could hear him gassing about Southend. He clearly enjoyed his "Good fill" but hated his one day stay in Torquay, criticising the whole area, he clearly didn't know, and claiming the local "gang culture" was as heavy as you'd find in the "worst parts of London" - idiot! Both the cod and haddock were to die for - not too many chips - just enough, and not greasy. My mushy peas were great. Just ashame the Hanbury's own draught ale wasn't on tap that night, but Doombar was a nice alternative instead. All round, fantastic. Congratulations Hanbury's for a great night and...
Read moreI ordered a takeaway on line arrived and picked it up but when I got home one piece of fish had been left out. I phoned and a very apologetic young lady delivered it to me in less than 15 minutes. Complete with more chips and a couple of bottles of their beer well done we all make mistakes and this is certainly the way to apologise. Now I would like to review our dinner one child had a jumbo sausage which we all agreed was very nice. I had plaice a common fish in chippies years ago but rare today it was grilled as I asked and was superb. My other grandchild had the chicken Goujons which were spicy as promised as was the curry sauce. My poor son who had to watch us eat expressed the view that it was the best fish and chips he had had. So difficult start but we'll made up in the end full marks we...
