I was excited to see they serve matcha here, but noted that it was called Maho Matcha so asked the woman at the front desk what the Maho meant. I was told its just the brand name and that it's just regular matcha. It came and was a good size but when I sipped it I literally gagged, made poorly with thick paste textured syrup at the bottom, incredibly sweet and tasted really strange/bad - not like matcha at all - more of a herbal/minty/spicy/sickly taste! I went back and asked if it had sugar in it and was told it doesn't, but that it's actually a syrup. Googled the Maho syrup and it's got sugar, chlorophyll (algae), spices, flavourings, and only 9% matcha - not exactly 'just regular matcha'. I've had matcha at hundreds of places and never had one anything like this - honestly undrinkable. The woman (after being super nice in our interaction when I ordered it), became VERY standoffish and made me feel very uncomfortable. I told her I wasn't going to be able to drink it as it's just too far from a regular matcha and she offered me more milk to water it down which I had to politely and apologetically refuse as it just tasted so much like algae, I couldn't stomach it. I wasn't offered a replacement, but had to request one - which was met with total distain and irritation. I asked for a smoothie from the smoothie bar and was told no as it's 'totally seperate' despite being the same brand right next to it. I eventually opted for the iced chocolate (which was tasty to be fair, hence 2 stars!), but before I left the woman patronisingly schooled me that 'matcha can be made with powder or with syrup and you should really ask next time' in a very condescending way. Matcha is by definition a powder, but i know some places make it with syrups or mixes, which is why I asked about it and why it was called 'Maho' when I arrived - and was told by her that it was just a regular matcha. An honest mistake is totally fine, but the awful attitude I was met with and poor customer service was so disappointing for somewhere I've heard such good things about. As someone who spent many years in the service industry, I find it really shocking - kindness costs nothing and I would never speak to someone the way I was spoken to.
Side note that the young man who served the drink to me was super friendly and normal - hence 2 stars for...
Read moreMy friend and I visited The Kiosk on Thursday. We ate delicious crab sandwiches and drank impressive local lager. The entire experience would have been perfect except that unfortunately the person working at the cafe allowed us to sit on the Kiosk's deckchairs a short distance onto the beach despite the fact that she had very clearly seen while bringing us our food that we had small dogs with us on leads. We weren't aware that this was not permitted. When we had finished eating the cafe employee suddenly approached us and said that she must quickly take away the seagull-repelling umbrella that the cafe lends you (presumably in an attempt to dissociate our presence from the cafe) and that somebody wished to speak to us. This proved to be a uniformed enforcement gentleman, presumably from the council or something, who in a not very pleasant manner threatened us with either a fine or arrest because of having dogs on the beach. This did not make the experience a very happy...
Read moreWhile visiting Lyme Regis in search of a decent coffee and something to fill a hole, I stumbled upon Kiosk Beach Cafe, located right on the beach. The picturesque location offers panoramic views of the coast, adding to the overall charm.
The coffee was excellent, and the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel was freshly prepared and delicious. Although it was a bit pricier than some might expect, the quality of the food, the fast service, and the prime beachfront location made it worth every penny. The provision of a deck chair to relax and an umbrella to keep those pesky seagulls at bay was a thoughtful touch.
Kiosk is popular with locals and tourists alike, and it's easy to see why. Overall, Kiosk Beach Cafe offers great value for a delightful seaside meal. Highly...
