My partner and I visited today for lunch, travelling from Newcastle. This has always been our favorite spot in Berwick for food and drinks, and the beer terrace, but unfortunately, today was a huge disappointment.
From the start, service was extremely poor. Our waiter didn’t seem to know what a fruity cider was and had to check. Then, despite there being only three other tables occupied, we waited over 45 minutes for our starter—just two portions of potato skins. Even after prompting who seemed to be the manager, who insisted ‘it’s coming now’ it still took another 20 minutes to arrive. To make matters worse, our garlic bread (ordered as a main) arrived at the same time, clearly the result of a mix-up we could see happening in the kitchen.
While waiting for our mains, we ordered a wine and a beer, insisting that our mains be brought out as soon as possible—even as we were still eating our starters. However, after a long wait, we cancelled the drinks and asked for water instead, only to be told shockingly, "Sorry, there’s no one to do drinks today."
When our mains finally arrived (delivered by the chef in chef whites !!!) —a calzone and a pasta dish—they completely underwhelming. By this point, we just wanted to leave. The meal deal included dessert or coffee, but we declined and left as soon as possible.
To top it all off, when I went to pay at the bar, I was hurried through the process by a more experienced waitress, only for my partner to later realize we had been overcharged by £8. We quickly got the money back in cash, but by then, the experience had already been ruined. Overcharged for this experience - sums up the disappointing service! The restaurant seemed incredibly disorganised!
From what started as a perfect day, this meal was a real letdown. Such a shame, as this used to be one of our...
Read moreWe came here for tea while on holiday, it looks lovely from the outside and the reviews were good so we thought we couldn't go wrong with Italian. We were seated next to a large party clearly having some kind of celebration, which wasn't the restaurant's fault but the party were incredibly loud which made it hard to have a relaxing meal. We ordered food, kids meal is limited to chicken nuggets and chips or a half portion of pasta but the prices were reasonable so we didn't mind too much. When the food came they brought me the wrong item, and took it back to the kitchen to redo. Two of the five of us had completely finished their meal by the time my cannelloni arrived and the other two were only eating slowly to be polite as I was sat without a meal. When the cannelloni did eventually arrive with a muttered apology it was the blandest food I have ever eaten. The beef was just browned off, with watery spinach and pasta sat in what tasted like plain passata and mozzarella on top, no bechamel like stated on the menu. No garlic, herbs, or seasoning of any kind. Gave some to my husband to try and he agreed there was just no flavour at all. We had coke on draught which had no ice in it, so it was quite warm and flat. My daughter's chicken dish was also very bland and uninspiring, though to be fair those who had pizza said they were very nice. No compensation was offered for the lateness of my meal. £57 for 5 meals would have been excellent value if the food had been good quality, but as it was I begrudged every penny. We would not return, which is a shame as it seemed a promising place to go for a meal...
Read moreBecause of some of the poor reviews , I was nervous about trying this place. And thought I’d post my honest feedback. Lovely restaurant building. Booked online and after a little wait due to a queue - shown quickly to our table, waiting staff very pleasant and attentive took our drink and food order pretty quickly. Starters came and were delicious. I had the prawns which were massive and really tasty, Hubbie had the bruschetta (also tasty) & my dad ordered the starter garlic bread - note this is big enough for four ppl! This is where it took a little dive, as waited over 45 minutes between courses. To then be told they’d ran out of salad for my parents steak meals… (can’t help but feel they could have got someone to run over to Asda which is 5 mins away - but that’s not for me to say!) but appreciate this was out of their control due to a delivery issue.. but the long wait to be told was rather frustrating. Main meals arrived. I ordered pasta and felt the portion size was quite small, - but I must say was very tasty and I enjoyed it very much. Parents had the sirloin steak. Mums steak was very large and dads was small, even though they ordered the same. But both agreed very tasty and good chips! Due to lack of salad, thought they would have offered more chips … I asked them if we could have tomatoes and olives to accompany which they did for us. Hubbie had the risotto and was good portion size and enjoyable. So overall we did enjoy the food , oh and the cocktails.. just let down a little by the slowish service. But waiters were very friendly. A good...
