Tucked away on the east side of Branthwaite Brow toward Kent Street and beside the jewellers, lies this hidden gem of an independent coffee shop—'Marra' which means friend in Northern dialect, the establishment is accessed through a charming ye-olde-worlde passageway. We had English breakfast tea, a slice of carrot cake, and a flat white—and everything was wonderful. What also made it special, was the setting. In the principal first-floor room, we marvelled at the exposed 16th-century roof timbers which had halved overlapping purlin members and a vernacular ridge arrangement and principal ridge beans—clearly assembled from reused timbers spanning different centuries. A real treat for lovers of old architecture. There’s also an outdoor niche by the entrance, covered and cosy, and another partly covered courtyard where everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves—sipping coffee and soaking in the atmosphere. We’ll most definitely be recommending it—and we’ll certainly be back when in town again. One recommendation is though for the coffee to be hotter as mine was not hot enough but otherwise it was good. Thank you, Lyndon, Peter &...

walked out of 4 kendal cafes before finding Marra. Knew instantly Id found a keeper. From the woody smell of a real fire (much needed in these wintery - spring rained days) unique style, good sized coffee cups and happy looking sweets (ever noticed those sad affairs that look limp and imprisoned sweating in a glass cage in some gaffs?) … I chose the divine beetroot brownie. Along with large oat latte the day was saved. Service with natural smiles and friendliness. And guess what, table was cleaned on our seating, which gets rairer and rairer these days (post covid i often clean cafe tables myself, perhaps staffing is an issue more??) nt only that, the waitress sprayed the detergent INTO THE CLOTH rather than into the surrounding air space. I have only wished that this would be the case in restaurants. Chemicals aren’t good fr you folks, and we don’t want them in our food and lungs. Really glad I kept searching until I struck...

Marra in Kendal is a haven for coffee lovers. The black coffee here is nothing short of perfection—rich, bold, and brewed to bring out the deep, nuanced flavors that true coffee aficionados will appreciate. Every sip is a testament to the quality of the beans and the care taken in brewing.

But if you’re looking for something a bit more indulgent, the mocha at Marra is a must-try. It’s the perfect blend of robust coffee and smooth, velvety chocolate, creating a drink that’s both comforting and satisfying. The balance between the two flavors is expertly crafted, making it a standout choice on their menu.

Whether you’re a purist who enjoys the simplicity of black coffee or someone who loves a rich mocha, Marra delivers an exceptional experience. Highly recommended for anyone who values a great...

Fabulous little hidden gem off the main street in Kendal. We're so happy we found Marra, the coffee was amazing and the pizzas were the best we've had in the UK for a long time. We're definitely going to be back! Staff were friendly, efficient and laid back. Great attitude from all of them, they're lovely. Takeaway cakes were delicious too!!
