Mumbai Indian Restaurant, Kendal â Where the Curry is Hot and So is the Gossip
Letâs be honest: finding truly good Indian food in a small English town can feel like hunting for a decent flat white South of the Watford Gapâtechnically possible, but not without heartbreak. Which is why stumbling into Mumbai Indian Restaurant in Kendal is rather like discovering a Taj Mahal replica nestled between a Greggs and a hardware store.
From the moment you enter, you're hit with a warm, fragrant cloud that says, quite firmly, âYes, darling, we use actual spices here. Take a seat, youâll live again.â And so you do.
Service is swift, friendly, and only occasionally confused, which is part of the charm. The staff are as warm as a fresh naan and about as likely to make your day better. They recommend dishes with the twinkle of someone who knows youâre about to cry tears of joyâor possibly chilli.
We began with the papadums, of course, because one must respect tradition. They were crisp, light, and came with a mango chutney so addictive it could end marriages.
Then came the Butter Chicken, which should really be rebranded as "Hug in a Bowl"âso rich, so creamy, it should come with a cholesterol warning and a small spoon-wielding grandmother who tells you to eat more. My dining partner chose the Vegetable Madras, which arrived with a kick sharp enough to reboot your nervous system and a depth of flavour that whispered sweet nothings to the soul.
The Home-Style Spicy Chicken was exactly as advertised: ferociously hot, but in a way that felt like a dare from a beloved cousinâone whoâs trying to hurt you, yes, but only because he loves you.
The rice was fluffy, the garlic naan chewy in all the right places, and the only disappointment was that we didnât have four more stomachs. Prices are reasonableâshockingly so, considering the sheer joy being ladled into each dish.
In conclusion: Mumbai Indian Restaurant is not just a good local curry house. Itâs a celebration of spice, warmth, and the occasional inability to feel your tongue. Kendal, count your blessings. This place slaps harder than your auntie when you forget...

We had a truly disappointing experience at this restaurant. The service was absolutely terrible. The man at the bar, slim South Asian guy, who I believe was the manager, was incredibly rude. Despite multiple requests, we werenât even provided with water.
As we were a large group still deciding on our order, we politely asked if we could at least get some daal and rice for the kids first â a reasonable request? But it was flatly denied, with the excuse that the entire order had to be placed at once.
The food? Just as bad. It tasted like pre-made frozen gravy with frozen chicken â definitely not authentic Indian cuisine. We ordered a variety of dishes, and nothing stood out. Everything was disappointing.
Donât be fooled by the fake positive reviews like we were. If you care about decent service and good food, this place is not worth your...
Read moreDuring the busy first week of 'Eat out to help out' we had unfortunately we had been let down by another Indian restaurant in the area, Eastern Balti, who didn't have a table until 9pm, as we arrived to discover they had given our table away. Fortunately, despite the lateness and Mambai closing at 10.30pm, they were extremely help and said they could squeeze us in. We arrived and had fantastic service, despite them clearly being exhausted after a very busy day with the new scheme and we did not feel rushed when they were preparing to close as we finished up our meal/bill when approaching 10.30 (their closing time). I'd highly recommend this restaurant over Eastern Balti if you are visiting Kendall as a tourist after a busy day mid week during the 'help out to eat out' scheme period for their reliability and...
