This is a brilliant, somewhat hidden, back lane pub. I’ve had many good times in here over the years. It’s a nice intimate place for a good night of drinking, talking and having a laugh. It occasionally has live music and has a good selection of proper beer and ale. It’s location gives it an old worldy, out of the way feel, and is generally a quieter, lower key spot compared to the rowdier options at the end of the lane on Micklegate. It used to be called the Acorn, and people still call it The Acorn despite the change in spelling, or sometimes say Akk Horn in an exaggerated tone to make fun of...

I visited this real ale pub on Tuesday 3rd August 2021 This old fashioned real ale pub is rightly in 2021 good beer guide ace selections of ales on although a bit pricey alas Thursday 25th September 2025 This york real ale pub is a proper locals real ale pub a 1 roomed pub with a feeling of history Off the beaten track and when inside this pub it has a grand atmosphere with easy to the ear background music. A place where sensible converse can be had and the 6 real ales are very well kept I would also say the staff today were excellent This pub I will strongly advise real ale...

Not just one of the best pubs in York but one of the best in the whole country. Been several times over the years. Booth and Madge making a first appearance...I think. Set off the main street just out of sight due to the street bending. Long pub with a rear courtyard where we once sat in a freezing winter as the inside was rammed. Had their house 3.8% bitter brewed by Half Moon. Very good. One of six hand pumped real ales. They have bar billiards as well. I love the game; far better than pool and takes up little room. Also a CAMRA Good Beer Guide regular. Lovely interior. Even...

Excellent Sunday roast. Lamb was especially tender and tasty. Good value too. Outside of pub down an alleyway is deceiving - inside the atmosphere is super friendly, traditional pub but very light inside because of big windows to outside area. Slightly off the beaten track so not too busy at 12.30 when we arrived but locals started coming in from 1.30pm. A few seats at the bar so you can just come in for a pint. But the lunch made our visit. Will be back.

Happened upon this pub on a ramble down the side streets and walked back from town to give it a go. Harry Sparrow Cider (Aspalls) on tap - we haven't seen this outside of Suffolk. Sampled the Black pudding and Stilton topped pork pies, both were good. They were gearing up for a smartphone quiz so we had a swift and moved on.
