The Cellar — Restaurant in England

The manager on duty Havia? was somewhat put out when we arrived. This was my first visit and I had been invited to join friends who were already at this venue. There was plenty of seating and none of the staff mentioned we had to give up the table at a certain time because they were fully booked. One of our party already seated at the table had an assistant dog with her, the assistant tags clearly visible and I was told that he had had a problem with the disabled lady having her assistant dog with her on arrival even though the dogs assistance status was clearly visible. Most wine bars/eateries in Leigh are very accomodating with patrons bringing dogs into their venues so the fact that this was a small, well behaved, quiet, working dog trained to assist a disabled customer should not have legally been an issue. The other staff were extremely kind, helpful, friendly and professional, the venue has been decorated to a lovely standard and the ambience was very nice, but I did sense a bad vibe each time this man interacted with us to the point where I actually told a member of our party that I considered him to be rude and most unwelcoming. Throughout my stay I had two large glasses of red wine but the rest of my party had ordered food and several bottles of wine between them. We were finished up before 7pm and our bill was settled while i visited the rest rooms. On my return to the table I went to sit down while the others finished off there drinks and was told that after settling the bill this same man had told them we had to leave straight away, he needed the table back. Disgusting and outrageous behaviour from this manager. A substantial amount of money had been spent by us throughout our stay and then he rudely told my party to leave while they were finishing up. At no point had anyone told us we would have to give up our table.We are middle aged, 50's and early 60's, had been quietly enjoying a late afternoon out, all live locally and frequent the bars and eateries in the area regularly spending a fair bit of money while out. I had looked forward to adding this venue to my go to places with my partner, who fortunately wasn't present at the time but simply because of this mans attitude I won't be going back. He should be sacked. He doesn't belong in the hospitatlity business. I made a point of approaching him on the way out and quietly told him that i had found his behaviour towards us rude. He made no attempt to appologise or to enquire why i felt this way. He was very dismissive about my disatisfaction and simply said he had not been rude and carried on with what he had been doing turning...

We visited here Saturday night with some friends. The food was wonderful and was the atmosphere, unfortunately we received next to no service. We were pointed at the table given to us and when we sat down we asked to be moved as it was a bit uncomfortable for the two tall men at a barrel table. They found us another table which we appreciated, but once we were moved we got no service at all. We had to find someone to order drinks, we had to go find someone to get some menus, then we had to go find someone to order our food, then had to find someone to order more wine, then after our food came and went (delicious by the way, will definitely be back for the food) we finally had to go find someone to get the bill/pay. We were totally forgotten about. It’s a bit annoying when you can see people around you getting service when youre hungry/wanting a drink. Very hard to catch any staffs attention, tried and failed many times. When we did receive food/drinks the staff were lovely. Overall I will come back as the food...

The service went from bad to worse in this place. Extremely inattentive, we were served raw chicken (not just a bit under, actually raw) and whilst we did receive a substitute dish on the house, there was little to no apology from them and we felt they could have done more. Drinks took ages; even towards the end of the night when the restaurant was half empty, waiters just didn’t come to us enough. At one point my friend had to go and collect our drinks from the bar. We weren’t offered desserts. Just felt like they didn’t really care. Then they had to cheek to add 12.5% service charge to the bill for a table of 4! Needless to say we didn’t pay it and the lady who dealt with us at the end was extremely apologetic (which is the only reason the service gets 2 stars instead of 1). Menu-wise the offering was samey, lots of variations on cheese and bread, 3 versions of prawns and bread, and the “selection” of tortillas was just the same tortilla cut into 3 pieces! Food was average....
