If I was scoring this pub purely on the crème brûlée then I would have to score it 5 stars. It's a very good portion for £5.50 and has loads of flavour, unlike some other crème brûlées I've eaten elsewhere. This time round (I've been twice), I opted for the seared rump steak salad for main course. Their menu changes regularly I believe and all the ingredients tasted really fresh. At £13.95, I would maybe have expected a little bit more but it filled me up just enough to leave room dessert, which I'd highly recommend! There are plenty of beers to choose from and the bar staff are helpful in letting you try them before you commit. I had the Juggernaut on this visit and it was very enjoyable. It's located right on the canal and is only 10-15 minutes walk east from the main city center, and well worth a visit. There's plenty of outside seating for warm summer evenings and the interior is relaxed and airy. I'll definitely go back, and I'll definitely order the crème brûlée again!

Chester On a recent visit to Chester, relatives booked a table at Harkers for an evening meal. This is the third time over the past few years we have visited Harkers in the evening. On this recent visit we found the venue very busy and extremely hot inside [cooler outside, but the tables were full]. What I noticed on our last visit and this most recent visit is the abundance of dogs inside the building. We love dogs, but this pub is serving food in very close proximity to dogs and with the constant flow of people walking through with their dogs to the loos, there was considerable interacting/barking at dogs sitting on the floor, it was all a bit manic . Therefore we would not recommend this pub if you want to eat , as its prices reflect restaurant charges but the hygiene and dog free surroundings are lacking . A few days later a neighbour told us they have a ‘’dog free area’’ if you walk to the left once in the pub. We were not aware of this, nor was the person who booked the table. I suggest when people book they are informed of this option by the staff. Obviously it seems when the dog free zone is full your booking is put in the dog area .Other visitors informed us this pub is known as a’’ no children allowed pub’’, please check with pub if this is true, before visiting. We won’t be going there again for a meal, as besides having to share the space with dogs [towards the end of our meal, we had a very large German shepherd and collie at the table next to us].the meals were mediocre and overpriced, £16.95 for a beef burger and a mean portion of chips . Even though the pub sits next to the canal ,an investment of air conditioning or ceiling fans would really be an improvement during Summer months. The main problem was the amount of canine visitors, and the obvious oplressive heat, which I noticed most dogs were wearing fur coats ! They do not have a choice of where they are taken and some dogs do not do well in oppressive heat, especially if they cannot find shade or relief from the heat. I am astounded at the fact that management wouldnt provide air conditioning as pubs local to me do! Given the oppressive heat and the amount of food and smells of food around, it was tortureous to the dogs there. Most people choose not to eat in front of their dogs, my husband usually has our one in his room during meals, and he usually gets less food than the dog! I would call the pub BARKERS and hope that they at least aquire some air con ! The food is basic pub fayre not bad quality and staff ( Who must also suffer in the heat) did their best. Mrs Muir

was having an overnight stay in Chester when my wife and I come across this pub seemed to be busy Judging by the people sitting outside by the canal nice outdoor area with lights on well & nice hanging baskets. Then we go inside and again seems nice but the first thing we both noises its a bit up market ok yes it's Chester but surely everyone is welcome YES well NO if you have children that's a no to you if your in large groups that's a no to you as well . But if you have a dog come on in more than welcome. It's a very up Market customer they are going for . We have a drink or two . bar staff ok not what you call chatting anless you are middle class the prices are what they are.but in all said and done it's a nice place to stop and have a drink in a wonderful location by the canal. Would I go there again yes as me and my wife are as good as the rest . It's not how much you earn . Everyone should be made to feel welcome family / children / and football fans just as long as people keep their house in order. That's no children running around all over the place and no singing football songs as long as everybody respect everybody else then everybody should be made welcome

Very nice pub overlooking the Shropshire canal and located half way between Chester railway station and the city centre. Serves great real ale and and an extensive variety of other drinks which can be drank in the pub or outside in a seated area canal side. On this occasion I had booked a table in advance in the dining area of the pub, my meal (halibut) was great as was the food the other diners had, service is very good as they have plenty of staff on duty, the pub can get very busy especially on horse racing weekends. The atmosphere of the pub is vibrant with a well behaved crowd, decor compliments the building with some nice historical features. All in all a great pub when visiting Chester and popular with race goers. Real ale is about £4 per pint, food menu and price can be viewed on their website.

Fabulous menu and delicious Gluten Free food options. The team were very knowledgeable about GF requirements and, as a Coeliac, I was incredibly reassured about their procedures. They were so helpful and lovely, fantastic service. The food was absolutely delicious. We were a table of 6 with one Coeliac and one Vegetarian and everyone enjoyed their meals. For any Coeliac with a sweet tooth (like me!) there were more pudding options than I’ve seen on any menu! The Sticky Toffee pudding was incredible. Thank you Harkers team, I will be back to try more of the menu!

I've had the pleasure of visiting Chester several times over the past few years. The first time I came, I found this place while exploring the city. Now, no trip is complete without a visit to this pub. Several visits, preferably. This place isn't a standard shady sports pub with a bunch of young folks yelling at one another. No annoying loud music or stag/hen parties. It's a cozy, respectable place with interesting beers and great food. Probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. Dog friendly, as well. I can't wait until my next visit.
