I recently visited this pub with my friends to watch the football and, despite the lovely and polite doormen, bouncers, and some bar staff, the experience quickly turned sour. There was a 'private party' rope to signify reserved tables, which is understandable with the football final being on. My friends and I, along with many other groups, stood outside these ropes, waiting for the football to start. We rested our jackets on the pole where the rope was clipped causing no issues to anyone else.
Once the football began, we noticed many customers climbing over, tripping, and falling over these ropes rather than going around them, which seemed dangerous with alcohol involved. Someone decided to unlatch the rope to create a walkway and prevent any accidents, a gesture intended to be helpful, which I must note was not done by me. Given that the reserved seats and tables were full by then, I didn't see an issue with this.
However, the 'owner' stormed over, threw our jackets and bag to the floor, and when I pointed out that this was rude, I was threatened with being thrown out without explanation—except for being told, "You don't want to piss the owner off." I was dismissed when trying to explain what had happened, leaving me confused. We were causing no trouble, yet we were treated as if we were.
While other groups were smashing glasses and behaving much more chaotically than us, we felt very targeted. We continued to receive glares and nasty looks as we tried to watch the football, eventually moving because we felt extremely uncomfortable. This is not a place that treats paying customers with respect or manners. Instead, customers are met with disrespect, nastiness, and belittling behaviour from ‘the owners’- zero customer service etiquette.
This was my first and probably last visit. There are many more welcoming pubs in York where I'd rather spend my money and...
Read more(Let's cut to the chase...and get rid of the elephant in the room. You were part of the group who first claimed they had a booking in a full public house. We don't take bookings so you didn't tell the truth. You then proceeded to play the race card. The level of stupid and arrogance displayed was irrelevant as we were full. People coming in and out of the premises for a cigarette do not constitute white people been given preference, they are already customers. Why did you then follow the doorman down Bootham and the three of you surround him. Disgraceful behaviour! From a dishonest set of people.)
Thank you for the opportunity to respond. I am one of the three individuals who wasn’t allowed into the pub, and I would like to clarify a few points regarding the situation.
Firstly, we mentioned a booking because we had friends inside with a table waiting for us. The bouncer himself mentioned that the people he allowed in had bookings too, which is why we thought it was necessary to mention it.
Secondly, the incident did not involve playing any "race card." What we observed and felt was a genuine concern regarding how the situation was handled. It seemed that entry was being denied based on appearance, which is why we were upset.
Regarding the accusation of following and surrounding the bouncer, this is entirely untrue. We did not follow him; we drove past him on our way home. The claim that we surrounded him is a falsehood. I would like to speak directly to the bouncer to address this false claim and clear up any misunderstandings.
We recognize the importance of ensuring a safe and fair environment for both patrons and staff. Our reaction was driven by a sense of injustice, not by any desire to be disruptive or dishonest.
I hope this clarifies our side of the story, and I appreciate the opportunity to address...
Read moreVisited this bar for the first time a few weeks ago to watch the football and won’t be going back. Although the door staff and some bar staff were pleasant the owner and manager definitely were not. There were tables reserved for staff’s family members and the owners friends, and anytime you were near the tables, the manager would bark at you to not go near the table even though we were not sitting on it and it wasn’t reserved for another half an hour. Don’t let people in to take up standing room if you’re not happy with people taking up standing room. One of our group moved a rope because people, who were sat in the table area, kept having to climb over it with their drinks and it looked like an accident waiting to happen but we got told that if we did that again we would get thrown out and that we shouldn’t ’piss off the owner’. Fair enough if you don’t want us to move something out of the way but there was no need to be so aggressive and rude about it, especially when we were just trying to prevent an accident. It really felt like the owner and manager were really trying to push us into being more confrontational so they could throw us out so we just moved to another standing area away from them then left as soon as the football match was over. Looking at other reviews it seems many people have had a similar experience, as if they don’t actually value paying customers, it’s also interesting to see that some of the good reviews are from people who have photos with the owner. Looking at the responses to negative reviews, it comes across aggressive and defensive just like the way they...
