Saturday 7th December. My husband, daughter and I decided to go have brunch here. When we first entered the lady we spoke to was lovely. She sat us down. Took our orders. She failed to mention the breakfast omelette do not have any salt added and that we have to ask for it ( we didn’t know this as this was our first ). She also forgot to mention that the lahori nashta is £2.50 extra if we opt for the butter chicken option ( the menu also doesn’t mention this, just states the breakfast is ‘from…’)
We also ordered some momos off the menu. The lady serving us recommended to have it in a schzwan sauce as it goes very well with it. I thought this came with the food so I said ok. When the food came I saw the momos covered in that sauce along with a small bowl filled with it. This sauce was tangy and spicy so we didn’t even touch the small bowl - then we find out they charged us £1.50 for the extra sauce! Would have been nice to be made aware of it.
When we tried to bring up our issue about the salt and how itd would have been nice if we got the opportunity to be asked about the salt, the lady that initially served us kept repeating the same thing then another lady came up and started speaking to us in a very condescending manner. She was saying stuff like well we have so many branches and this is how it’s done in all of them which in turn we said we are also in the hospitality business so we know how things go about but whilst we were talking to her she just shrugged and walked off…surely a restaurant with so many branches will know how their staff should act?
After we had our food we asked to order a drink, the same lady came back and asked us. We said we’d like a bottle of coke, she in return do we want normal coke or alternative coke. To which my husband asked what do you have ( as in what brands of alternative cokes are there). That lady’s response was, I thought you have a restaurant, do you not sell them at your restaurant. I then asked her to clarify if it was salaam cola, Barr cola etc and asked for the price. She said one glass bottle of coke is £1.50 ( they then charged us £2.50 for it! So that’s an extra £ 5 to our bill without us being aware!).
After being treated like this we decided to leave rather than order anything else. For 3 brunch dishes, spending £31 seemed a bit much for us tbh but we didn’t complain and paid. What really annoyed was how we were treated. It shouldn’t matter how many branches you have, if you treat your customers like this then all your branches will start...
Read moreWhere do I start with Chai Green.. We were fortunate to try some freebies on launch due to a promotion on social media - the butter chicken being the main star, we had to go back again! We were kindly welcomed by Ahmad who looked after us amazingly - from being courteous to going through the menu and looking after the kids, we felt at ease when we sat down.
We ordered butter chicken again, with some stir fry, chaat, dynamite shrimps and two mojitos. All of the food was on point - here's a short summary of each:
Butter Chicken: Stunning, bold, creamy flavour. Not spicy and not too sweet, it's an art to master this dish and they have spot on. The chicken itself was so tender, kids loved it! Chaat: Nice appetiser to open a meal. The flavour was a traditional one you'd expect in a chaat (aka bhel puri). The yoghurt was balanced too. Dynamite Shrimp: Can't fault it, nice and crispy with right level of sauce. The portions were great. Chicken Stir Fry: This one complimented the meal as it had a little more heat. Not heavy carb loaded and a level portion with chicken and veg (paneer option available too). Mojitos: We tried two, passion fruit and mango ones. They were very refreshing. Many places you can just taste the syrup, but this was great and was really needed on a hot day.
On the opening day we also tried a samosa chaat which was something else. The flavours were so bold and not a traditionally yoghurt base but you can really appreciate the flavours of the samosa and spice mix.
The shop isn't the biggest because it's aimed to be a café, for which it is ideal. The menu is not overly complicated and imbalanced - they seem to have a good range, which they do well, which is the way it should be.
Finally a brilliant traditional desi place OK Evington that lives up to the hype - defo go and give them a try, you will not be...
Read moreAs a regular at the Birmingham Alum Rock branch, Chai Green has always been a family favorite. So, when I found out that a new branch was opening in Leicester on Evington Road, I was beyond excited to try it out.
I finally got the chance to visit yesterday with my little brother, and we were eager to indulge in some dessert. I usually go for the French toast, but the new menu had so many exciting options that I was tempted to try something different. The San Sebastián cheesecake and Matilda cake immediately caught my eye, but unfortunately, they were out of stock at the time. Slightly disappointed, I decided to go with the pancakes instead.
My little brother ordered himself a pink Kashmiri chai, which he really enjoyed. I was also craving a strawberry mocktail, but it wasn’t listed on the menu. Thankfully, the waiter who served us—whose name I didn’t catch—was incredibly accommodating. He offered to make a strawberry mocktail for me, even though only a strawberry daiquiri was available. I really appreciated this level of service and attention to detail.
The only downside to our visit was that it took quite a while to be served, despite the café not being particularly busy at the time. If you’re in a rush, this might not be the best spot, at least for now. It might be due to the branch still settling in and getting around things, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Overall, despite the wait, my experience was positive. The service was friendly, and I’m excited to return and hopefully try the desserts that were out of stock. Chai Green Leicester is definitely living up to the high standards set by the Birmingham branch, and I’ll definitely be...
