Visited once again as my husband treated me to lunch on 18/06/2022. It was busy so plenty of atmosphere today. Once again the bar staff were polite if unsmiling but they were busy I must admit, they don't seem to want to make your experience more memorable. We first sat at a table for 2 near a window but directly under a ?brewing vat for beer so quickly moved to another with more room around it. I noticed that unless there are plates on the table there is no disinfection between customers though. We ordered at the bar from their famous pie menu. I opted for the Crofters (Shepherds)pie, which is lamb done in a red wine gravy topped with haggis/mashed potato. My husband chose the Wild boar/chorizo pie in a thick pastry crust with mashed potato. Both were served with buttered peas/leeks, cabbage and baby carrots. There were also small jugs of gravy as well as an accompaniment. Both pies were served together and as my pie already had a red wine gravy I didn't add any more from the jug. The pie was tasty and the veg was lovely but it's a shame that I didn't have any crispy areas on the topping. My husband's pie came in a very thick pastry case and I tried a little of his meat and it could have been chicken as it was bland and didn't seem to have any strong richness or depth of flavour. The service was fine and the price for 2 meals (not drinks) was exactly £30. I had to use the toilet facilities after my meal so went down the spiral staircase to the ladies. There are 6 toilets (1 out of order) and 2 soap dispensers/hand dryers. Initially they looked clean enough but in the cubicle there is a shelf area above and behind cistern upon which I left my initials and "Dust me" as it certainly needs it, also the air vents are thick with dust. I wonder if it's due to bar staff having to do own housekeeping? I feel that on their website they show that the entrance is "wheelchair friendly " but this would only be true if they had someone to hold the door open for them on...

I really don’t know where to start with this post because I still can’t believe this happened so i will start from where everything took a very bizarre turn there were three of us me my wife and my brother in law in this pub having a drink we were later joined by my sister in law and my 24 year old disabled nephew who is in a wheelchair around six o’clock the four of us had just ordered a drink and we chatting to each other my nephew was having a great time just watching everyone then a barmaid approached us and asked what age he was my sister in law said he was 24 but this very young barmaid didn’t seem to believe us so we then asked for the manager who after a bit of a wait came out to talk to us we told him my nephew was 24 he also didn’t believe us so after a brief discussion the manager who I believe his name was Brian said finish your drinks and leave we are not serving you another drink we reiterated again he was 24 Brian the manager then became very agitated and started in my opinion to get very angry we told him to calm down because by this time my nephew starting getting a bit upset he then said very angrily finish your drinks and leave we are 4 very responsible adults and would never knowingly take a minor into a bar he is disabled and in wheelchair for goodness sake I know there is an over 21 policy even though is 24 the issue we have is the complete lack of professionalism and respect he had for the 5 of us as customers who had bought a couple of drinks and some food if that’s how the Nicholson’s chain train the staff to treat customers like that we will set foot in one of their premises again and Brian the manager you had a...

1 star for service as it’s not a place where service is given. We booked a table for my partners birthday, was a nice booth. We weren’t sat and found our table ourselves as it had my name on as we had stood and waited for a bit, we did confirm at the bar that it was our table and didn’t just sit ourselves didn’t really know how it worked as I thought it would be table service but when my partner went to the toilet he noticed a sign saying order at bar, which was fine but would have been nice to be told. I had the mac and cheese which was brilliant cannot Recommend enough absolutely lovely. My partner had the balmoral chicken which was meant to be with a whiskey sauce … it was definitely not whiskey sauce it tasted like carrot soup we did mention this to the staff who assured us it was definitely whiskey sauce (it wasn’t whiskey sauce) we eat out quite regularly so have had many whiskey sauces and I mean who doesn’t know what whiskey sauce tastes like? We were going to stay for a while have some dessert and some drinks but decided to just head elsewhere.have attached a photo of said...

A very cozy pub with a wonderful atmosphere! Certainly a welcome refuge from the hustle and bustle of the city centre with its beautiful interior and friendly staff. If you'd like a quiet pub where you can sit and talk over pints, this is the place: I was extremely grateful that unlike most city centre pubs, the Drum and Monkey doesn't blast music that you have to shout over to be heard. Drinks were reasonably priced and pies were delicious with great vegan and vegetarian options. My only complaint is about the veg that came with the pie, which was clearly just frozen stuff that had been boiled/steamed. This didn't ruin the meal but definitely let us down a bit after the menu promised "chantenay glazed carrots" and what we were served was rather bland and mushy. This feels like a somewhat middle class complaint though so I'd like to emphasize that the pies were amazing and the rest of the menu looked great too!
