Mermaid Alley — Restaurant in Great Britain

If we were grading this place just on food it’s a 10/10 easily. A great hidden gem stashed down an alley way in Penzance than we almost missed but am so glad we found.

The menu was great and it was hard to decide what to have with so many different and interesting dishes to choose from. Both of the dishes we had were incredible, full of flavour and looked great. The tandoori fish was a great twist on fish and chips and the curry gravy it was served with almost got drank! The beef brisket tacos were some of the best we’ve ever had, unbelievable flavours.

However what let the overall experience down was the rudeness, immaturity and unprofessionalism of the two young girls working on the downstairs bar. They spent the whole evening side eyeing, making comments and laughing about guests and playing on their phones. We came to this restaurant after a boat trip as it looked like there was nice food when googling online so we wanted to try it out. As we entered we were starving and dehydrated from not daring to drink on the boat so we didnt need the toilet. We were shown to a table and we sat down to wait for menus for drinks and food. We were sat there 30 minutes with no menu and no drinks still. But the waitess was walking around us taking drinks and meals to people. Ignoring us and not acknowledging that we had no menus, etc. So we walked out as I don't understand why we had to ask for them again in such a small place when she walked past us many times. The venue was gorgeous but a shame about the service, she definitely needed to be more attentive to customers and seemed overwhelmed when the venue was not...

I was really looking forward to try this place after reading all the reviews but unfortunately I can't say I had a very good experience. Firstly we waited at least 30 min for the order to be taken after we sat down. I don't mind waiting for food but waiting to order the food it's just strange. I would have been happy with waiting for the main dish if at least I could have ordered some starters. The starter we ordered was actually quite nice but the rest of the food was very disappointing. It looked good but it just didn't taste good. I had the fish of the day and my partner had the fish and chips and both dishes were quite bland and lacking flavour. Maybe it was just a one off but I had much better food in others restaurants in the area...
