I was at Social last night, and as per usual, the level of talent available in Hull has truly blown me away. Firstly, I am going to talk about the venue, but I feel it would be disrespectful not to give a nod to the local talent that graced the stage. That deserves its' own revue, which I will do. For now, suffice to say that while social is a smaller venue, it has an atmosphere that is laid-back and understated. I am sometimes taken aback by the levels of "curb your enthusiasm" displayed by the local audience, to the point where I sometimes wonder if we are watching the same performance. Social has both standing and sitting room, as well as an outside pair of tables where smokers huddle outside taking breaks in-between sets. The sound and lighting set-up is modest but professionally equipped, and is utilised to the full by the staff. The evening began with a performance by Ellie Pollard, a local artist who is a truly talented vocalist and keyboard performer, at times accompanied by violin. Ellie is almost too much talent for one person, being a writer and musician as well as an event co-ordinator who performs solo as well as in groups such as Beggar’s Bridge, Fiddlers Elbow and the White Horse Ceilidh Band. This is not the first time I have seen her perform and it will certainly not be the last. The next band to perform was the Black Ravines, whose stage presence and sound was absolutely stellar. Watching these young people perform I was reminded of the phrase "the kids will be allright". If this is the level of talent we can expect from the youth, then that is certainly the case. There were vocals that gave me chills, hard guitar rythms that banged, drums on point and killer leads. They crushed it. With style. The final act for the evening was the Froot. Now, the Froot are a unique band with a sound that defies casual labelling. Their performance was absolutely hair-raising for all the right reasons. Multiple vocals and a smooth blend of genres and sounds ticked all the right boxes. Sometimes reminiscent of great bands such as the Doors and Led Zeppelin, it would be reductive to try and paint them as 'retro'. They performed with confidence and style that is, in a word, 'inimitable'. I have been to the Social only twice, and on both occasians have been absolutely thrilled by the local bands who perform here. If anything, I hope that if this is the kind of talent on display in this and other local venues, then it only proves that Hull has more to offer than is immediately obvious, to the...
Read moreMe and my 16 year old son have been 3 times this month. We went to see Porkpie, The Jam'd and last night Badness who were supported by The Zynx. All the bands were fantastic and I especially liked The Zynx with their old (and not so old )school punk anthems. Great to hear some songs that don't get played that often too, like Rancid's Time Bomb as their opening number. I suspect I may have had a couple to many sherbets, as I initially confused their intro of " is Vic there" with the DK's holiday in Cambodia😀.Each time, the atmosphere was great, everyone was friendly and all the staff are great, from the clientele, to the owner, the bar staff and Mark the doorman. No hint of any trouble, the beers a fair price for nowadays. Everyone were super kind to my son who is autistic and we were able to dance and enjoy the night in a space he felt comfortable in. 3 great nights, thank you very much to everyone at The Social for putting on these great bands....
Read moreMassive edit to my previous review. Been multiple times since my last 5* review and all been amazing. Tonight we went to see the Belgrave House band again and the venue staff were lacking. Found the bearded doorman was rude and the barperson with the fringe was really patronising. I'm hoping it's just a midweek glitch on this otherwise fantastic venue.
Brilliant venue. Awesome staff. Watched the Belgrave House Band doing Ziggy Stardust which was incredible (Third time I've seen them). I'd rather do these smaller spots than the bigger arena type venues. Get out and support your local small music venues guys...In this current climate, when they're gone they'll be gone for good. Music is best live in an amazing venue...
