Food is nice, but not life changing. We came for our anniversary as a more casual meal vs the old stamp house and left quite whelmed. Baguette had a great texture and flavour, butter felt a bit old and was hard. Tapenade on toast with crab was delicious, likely our favourite dish but sadly only about 3 mouthfuls! Potted shrimp and curried cauliflower was as good as the reviews say! Lovely smooth flavour. Cod came with singular (but large) mussel. Cabbage was lovely, cod was half lovely but overcooked on the edges which made it rubbery. A shame. Whole plaice was very soft and buttery. We should have saved our bread to mop up really. Chicory pear cheese and walnut salad felt underwhelming and unbalanced between the flavours. Cumbrian gingerbread dessert was unexpected but wholely enjoyed. Service was a bit weird and unfriendly. They were kind enough to let us come early for our reservation and we sat at the bar. But, asking for tap water was a pain (he gave my partner a single glass, and then gave me one when I specifically asked for one, but didn’t offer, and never refilled despite us draining our cups quickly, and didn’t give us a jug despite giving other tables jugs…). That was quite a specific example but overall felt a little dismissive and unfriendly. We could also see into the kitchen and saw the guy prepping the bread and meats scratch his beard with his gloved hand. Slightly offputting ha

The food at The Schelly was beautiful. We started with the deer tartare and duck as snacks – both absolutely delightful. For mains, we shared the cod and lamb with pickled carrot, and everything was cooked to perfection. The flavours were fantastic and really showcased the kitchen’s creativity. However, the service sadly let the experience down. I’m from Yorkshire, and my plan for the ultimate weekend was to go climbing and then enjoy an early dinner at The Schelly. When I walked in, wearing a hiking outfit, I immediately felt a little unwelcome (though I wasn’t the only one dressed like this in the restaurant). We were seated at the bar, which turned out to be quite awkward, as my partner had to move his chair every time a waiter passed by. Fine – we didn’t get much attention from the staff, but we actually appreciated the peace. The disappointing part came at the end of our meal. When we finished, the head waiter asked where we were from. My partner answered “Cluj, Romania,” and the response we got was: “There’s a huge Romanian community around here, you should go to Tesco, you might make some friends there.” I felt this was an unnecessary and rather discriminatory remark. It really dampened what should have been a perfect evening. We paid the bill and left immediately. The food was fantastic, but the service and the comment left a bitter aftertaste that overshadowed an otherwise excellent dinner.

As big fans of Kysty we had to give this a try. Vibe is nice. Switched to the bar stool seats as they had more space. They are comfortable and good seats to people watch the regulars spilling out of the pub opposite, but you do feel like you have your back to the restaurant. Now the food. Toast with olive tapenade is a nice snack and the Focaccia is plane but brought alive by the hummus. I loved how unapologetic the Cumberland sausages are served. Straight up moist sausages perfectly cooked with a cranberry dip. The mackerel and beetroot dish was perfect. For mains we had the celeriac and cod. The cod is similar to a dish we had before at Kysty. It was the star of the show. Perfectly cooked you really got the full flavour of the cod in the irresistible buttery vermouth sauce. The celeriac with cavalo Nero and dash sauce was awesome too. The fried artichokes with garlic emulsion was a nice alternative snack. The cheese with poached pear was a lovely combination but a little stingy on the cracker and pear, we ended up eating the cheese straight. To finish we had the cheesecake which is as good as the ones you find in San Sebastián. Great meal, definitely recommend.
