I’ve visited a few times on holiday and it used to be lovely, but this visit was a letdown. The menu has been noticeably reduced and prices have gone up. Staff didn’t seem fully trained, they were chatting among themselves and not attentive to the dining area.
Foodwise: We had the burger and the cod. The burger was alright but not like it used to be, the patties are smaller and have less flavour than before (previous visits felt more like handmade patties with more character and flavour). The cod’s batter looked nice and crispy on the outside, but it was soggy on the inside; mushy peas were fine. The chips were the biggest disappointment, they were soggy and seemingly undercooked for both dishes, lacking the crispness they had on past visits.
Atmosphere was the best part - pleasant dining area and a nice sea-side feel when the front doors were open, although staff closed them later because of the wind.
Other notes: Bathroom was clean and relatively easy to access for me (there are steps). Seating area was nice and clean and the tables weren’t sticky The temperature inside was comfortable.
Would like to see them bring back the fuller menu and the higher standard of cooking/service I remember - I’d return if those...
Read moreFood poisoning! Visited here last week and had plaice and chips with curry sauce and I was seriously ill. A couple of hours after eating I was doubled over in agony, spent the entire night in the loo with D&V and I'm still having problems with my digestion 5 days later. We ate out as a family all week on holiday and I was totally fine until this meal from fish & grill. Got to book in at the doctor's tomorrow to get some tests done as I'm still have loose stools and tummy ache with sweating when trying to eat. The meal was really oily and the batter and chips were dark brown so they either use a different oil to other places or it was in need of a change but food poisoning isn't nice when I had to drive almost 4 hours home with 4 young children in the car, stopping every 20 mins to run into toilets
Price wise it's extremely expensive for very tiny portions as well. Kids meals only suitable for up to 3 years, older children were still hungry, husband had to have 3 slices of bread to fill him up and he had a medium adults cod and chips. £11.50 for a large plaice and chips plus £5 to park
Just ran through other replies from the owner and they appear to be very argumentative and cold so I don't expect a...
Read moreHaving read all the raves about this fish bar on the seafront of Great Yarmouth, and being a huge fan of fish & chips when done well myself, I needed to visit the place ... and was disappointed. Granted, the cod itself was excellent, if not as huge as I expected given I had ordered the large cod & chips. The cod was firm and flaky, the crust crunchy and delicious. However, the chips were flabby and undercooked, as they are at oh so many British fish & chips outlets, and the baked beans of the standard Heinz pre-made variety. Also, there was no tartar sauce that came with the dish, which mystifies me as it is an essential part of fish & chips (You can order them with curry sauce, which I don't think is very suitable). The price is also at the upper end of the spectrum, only partially redeemed by the better than average seating inside. Drinks are expensive, too - and there's not much variety, which is sadly normal. Service was efficient and quick, but not terribly friendly. Summing up, I find the popularity of Fish & Grill to be mystifying, considering the many alternative options. The fish & chips at The Pub on the Prom, which is closer to the Britannia Pier, were...
