Dropped in here today with my daughter. As it's bank holiday weekend no special offers for food were valid - that's fine, just cost a bit more than a regular Sunday might. We ordered our food, but when it arrived I immediately noticed the pizza was damaged (see pic). Ok no biggie, but then I realised it was the wrong pizza. Menu description was "tomato, goats cheese, cherry tomatoes, cheddar and mozzarella, finished with rocket leaves and sticky fig relish". From what I could tell at a glance, it was just a Margherita pizza! So I went up to the bar and attempted to get attention of a staff member. It was fairly busy, but after waiting several minutes without service I directly addressed a staff member to inform them of the problem. They were apologetic and pizza was taken away. Great, I thought, a little annoying my daughter is eating alone but the problem will be fixed and maybe it was a simple mix up in the kitchen and someone else had received my pizza. Several minutes later THE SAME PIZZA (by now definitely not hot!) is brought back, this time with freezing cold raw cherry tomatoes chopped on top, and a few dollops of cold relish. I was told they had no rocket leaves. Honestly I thought this had to be a joke, but no, that was the idea of resolution. At this point I gave up, picked off the raw tomatoes and just ate it because we still had a 2 hour drive to get home. There did end up being goats cheese on it, but overall it was a distinctly poor experience and not somewhere we will go back to on future visits to the town. On the upside, my daughter assured me her food was nice.

Extremely Disappointing Dining Experience I had dinner at The Railway at Buxton on a Saturday evening around 7pm, expecting a pleasant weekend dining experience. Unfortunately, it turned out to be highly disappointing. Upon browsing the menu, I found that several items I wanted to order, including steak, beef burgers, and lamb skewers, were unavailable. In fact, nearly one-third of the menu—both starters and main courses—was not being served. There were no signs or notices at the entrance to inform customers of the unavailable items, which I found both unprofessional and misleading. It’s unacceptable for a restaurant to run out of so many items during peak hours on a weekend night, when customer expectations are naturally higher. When the food finally arrived, the quality was mediocre at best—far from the standard I anticipated. This added to my frustration, as the available options were already limited. Overall, the lack of transparency, poor preparation, and average food quality made this dining experience very disappointing. I felt compelled to share this review, along with photos of the menu and food, to warn others. I sincerely hope the restaurant addresses these issues and improves both its inventory management and overall dining experience. Until then, I cannot recommend this place to anyone looking for a reliable and enjoyable meal in Buxton!!!!

The Railway @ Buxton is a family-friendly, superior pub & restaurant near the Buxton Railway Station (Duh!) and just below the arching railway bridge. A fairly large place, it offers a decent selection of beers (including a number of hand pumped ales by Joseph Holt of Manchester) and an extensive menu that focuses on British food and pub grub. When I visited on a Saturday noon, the place was packed. And for good reason: The "rustic sharing board" (effectively a ploughman's lunch) I had was both generous and tasty, with a small pork pie, a Scotch egg, two slices of honey-roasted gammon, a big helping of local cheese, cut-up sausages, various sauces and pickles and a few slices of rather appetizing roasted white bread. I had a look around at other people's dishes and they all looked very good, too. The bar staff was friendly and efficient, and while Joseph Holt beers may not represent the pinnacle of British ales, they are well-made and were certainly kept fresh on the premises. Prices are pretty much what you would expect from a superior regional pub/restaurant, but there are several specials throughout the week. The décor is very much geared towards families: unfussy, clean, comfortable. Recommended!

Visited today after seeing they had the carvery on midweek for the month of December and thought we would give it a try as had been previously before they moved it to Sunday only and always enjoyed it........well what a major disappointment!! We walked over to the carving station and waited for someone to appear and a young lady said someone would be with us shortly but didn't let anyone know we were waiting. Eventually a young man came out with a few Yorkshire puddings he'd obviously been waiting for....I proceeded first and as most of the meat looked like it had been sat there for hours as dry to look at I opted for the turkey as it looked the freshest of the three ...I paid £12.50 each for a standard carvery for both myself and my partner and we got 2 miniscule slices of meat when our plate given back to us. I got a Yorkshire too so I then moved Up to the veg which again looked like it had been there for ages as dishes were nearly empty and veg overcooked and very hard the chef then had to go and get the mash as there wasn't any. A disappointing array of veg with only sweetcorn, peas and sprouts available....no carrots or beans or something so limited in choice. The roast potatoes were so hard and overcooked you couldn't cut them properly and as this was also a celebratory occasion we were all disappointed indeed. The waitress asked if all was ok to which my partner replied "it's ok but nothing special"....she didn't react to this and moved on to the next table. My partner's mum paid for a small carvery and yet she got the same portion as us but the carver gave her the scraps of the side rather than carving a fresh slice of meat. All in all a majorly disappointing visit and as we travelled over 30 miles to visit Buxton it...

Terrible experience, please avoid at all costs! I have never felt more out of place in an English restaurant/pub than yesterday at Railway in Buxton. Right away, my friend and I experienced a bad vibe, but the best, or worse, was yet to come. After ordering over £80 in food and drinks, all the starters and main courses were brought to us at the same time, to the point that they didn't fit on the table. Apparently Oliver, the young inexperienced and unprofessional waiter who took our order, doesn’t know the difference between starters & main courses, perhaps too busy chuckling with his companion behind the counter about our accent (a European and a Londoner, by the way), and of us. When we pointed out the absurdity of serving all the dishes together, the young waitress who had served us, didn't even have the decency to apologise, but only told us "sometimes it happens like that". Outrageous! After our complaint, they totally ignored us, and for the entire time we were there, ours was the only table they didn't approach to ask if we needed anything else or just make sure that we were OK. And then we understood... we understood that, at the Railway in Buxton, foreigners and non-locals are not welcome, or are barely tolerated. This is not a place for us, too bad, because Buxton is a beautiful town, but this experience has affected us so much that we immediately left. I don't even talk about the food, because after such a “welcome”, my opinion is totally irrelevant. Please avoid at all costs, not...
