As with most Wetherspoon's pubs, this establishment appeals to a very broad range of customers, from families with children, to punters looking for cheap booze, and the odd tourist thrown in. For parents, this place benefits from having a small park adjacent to the pub for the kids to play in, and this has the added attraction of making the beer garden a more pleasant experience for adults. I was very pleased to see that most of the outdoor seating area was designated non-smoking. In COVID times, when most people have been excluded from pub interiors, many beer gardens have been marred by all the smokers puffing away around the tables occupied by the non-smoking majority; effectively ruling out any chance of enjoying an open air drink or meal. So this was a great feature of the pub. At the time of my visit it had been 18 months since last going to a Wetherspoon's, and I was surprised to see how much the food menu had changed; with many new healthier additions, such as an increased number of veggie and vegan options, and smaller portions for those watching their weight. The chain was among the first to utilise an app to place your order at your table, thus avoiding going to the bar, even before the pandemic, and this too had received an upgrade, with craft beers now included in the options, instead of just a small selection of more ordinary ales and lagers. I chose a small portion brunch for my meal, and it was fine. It's Wetherspoon's food; keep your expectations in the middle of the road and you won't be disappointed. The interior of the pub was smart and the loos were bright and clean and fully-stocked with paper and hand soap. The greatest asset for this branch of the chain is its massive outdoor seating area, which was large even before the pandemic, but has since been doubled with the addition of half a dozen gazebos on the former car park. Wetherspoon's may not be your go-to place for fine dining, but The Wye Bridge is clean, spacious and pleasant enough, with a wide range of food and drink on offer at very reasonable prices and...
Read moreMyself and my partner after travelling on holiday at the peak District, stopped here for a drink and some food. The pub building and exterior are beautiful. Inside looks like anyold run down spoons. We were excited to see a large fish and chips on the menu,( our local spoons only provides a small). When our food came the portion off fish and chips looked very small only a handful of chips too. Didn't fill the plate. We question it straight away. A lovely young waitress apologised and said she'd take it back to confirm. She brought it back confirming from the kitchen it was large. My partner unhappy with the portion size already, then cut into the fish too find it was all batter and no fish. He then gets up to go a find someone to talk to about this. The manager comes over very defensive with her back up. We try to explain to her and she keeps saying we should of said something straight away. We explained we did, she kept saying we should of straight away and how it was hard to tell when he'd cut into it .when I tried to explain that he hasn't eaten any he's just cut it open, she accused me of shouting at her, (in a loud pub) she also said it's was definitely a large because they apparently cut itin half for a small portion, which is just unbelievable and ridiculous to serve that as a meal. Our local spoons served the same size as a small . She brought us a fresh portion which was better as there was actually fish inside the batter. However was still a small portion including the chips. She put our food down and walked away quickly so we couldn't say anything, she didn't come back and check on us or our food. If I hadn't already paid at the bar I wouldn't of paid considering how rude the manager was and poor food. Won't...
Read moreAnother nice building Saved by. Spoon's. We've visit a lot on our holiday touring the south coast midlands and Derbyshire. At this one, The Wye Bridge, our pizzas were great as usual. The beer, good, as usual. The table service, good as usual. The attitude of the bar staff including the manager at the time was unwelcoming, uncaring and rude. I believe I explained to the bar person , they had drowned my whisky, having filled it to the top of the tumbler. She shouted that that was how she was trained, pushing the glass closer toward me and stepping back from the bar, they said that I could see the manager about it if I wanted. Unnecessarily escalating the situation out of proportion. Surprisingly the bar manager agreed that that is how they were trained to poor a "splash" of water. I was curtly given a fresh drink. Also drowned. I did not point out the error. There was no point. We left shortly after. I was made to feel like a teacher, telling pupils it was wrong to bully and being bullied for it. I've submitted a complaint to the official website already but surprisingly I've not had any response. Maybe standards have slipped as there are too many complaints to respond to? May be it's a sign...
