It’s a shame to think that this one of a kind Tea room, unique to Lincoln positioned in the Bailgate which we have visited for years, completely different to your coffee chains such as Starbucks has now on more than one occasion been a horrible experience.
Unfortunately when we walked inside, we were told straight away that the table that we headed for which would have been nice and cosy due it being a slightly chilly day was not an option which would have been completely reasonable if she had said it nicely. To add to this we were told we “had” to sit at a table right next to the door which was left open because it conveniently had just two seats, but our intention was to have Afternoon Tea for two and therefore this table wouldn’t have been big enough, and therefore would have been uncomfortable. It didn’t help to add insult to injury that there was one person sat outside at a table for four and another person sat on her own at a table for a four. Clearly interior space is limited inside but there is a way of speaking to people politely and doesn’t take much effort.
Previously when we visiting an older gentleman was always very hospitable and was very welcoming completely different to the last few occasions we have been which was one of the main reasons why we enjoyed visiting. I do hope he hasn’t retired as I suspect, only one lady who was slender with long fair hair who has been there a long time, was welcoming. The other looked unhappy, unapproachable and clearly shouldn’t be working there and couldn’t wait to barge across in front of us to put the menu on the table therefore discouraged by her demeanour decided best to leave.
To add to this, the selection of cakes available hidden in the corner leaves much to be desired and when we asked what was available, we were spoken too rudely as though we should know.
Clearly this individual doesn’t appear to have experience working in hospitality and with all the competition around the corner I wouldn’t be surprised if she put more customers off in the future and for the business to succeed clearly this needs...
Read moreWe had been to an event at the cathedral and just nipped in as it had just begun to rain. There were no seats so we sat outside. Eventually there was a space and in we went. Then we moved to the window. The first thing I noticed about this place was the calm and sort of hidden location. Then I saw the menu. Well Cream Tea £22 basically everything an afternoon tea has but without the cake. We had literally just been in the cathedral cafe which was offering afternoon tea for £21 per person so that’s clearly £42 So anyway, we sat there, I said Mike, he said yes, I said look, he said yes, I said shall we? He said yes. I had coronation chicken sandwich on brown bread, he had cheese and ham and look at the size of it! We were so so happy there on a Saturday morning just munching away and enjoying the damp but not cold spring near the light of the cathedral with nicely painted windows. Fantastic cheerful and genuinely funny service. I loved here everything was perfect and such a nice surprise it was like we...
Read moreExcellent cafe with equally wonderful staff. Quick service. The food was very tasty with a very good sized serving. Located almost opposite the cathedral and around the corner from the castle it could not be better placed. If I had to pick one thing that knocked a star off it’s the fact that they don’t serve a full English breakfast. That said, we chose scrambled egg on toast with bacon which was fabulous and to be fair made a change from a full English, I do understand that the lack of that particular breakfast could be a real letdown but if you give something else a go you won’t be disappointed. Well run, clean and above all very friendly. Cost wise it was very reasonable, so much so that we went back a lunchtime for soup, which was obviously homemade that day. Needless to say it was also very tasty. If we are ever in Lincoln again we wouldn’t hesitate to...
