We went for vegan afternoon tea in March this year, and enjoyed it so much, we decided to go back again on our visit to Liverpool in September. We arrived on time, and had the same server we had back in March. She gave us a menu with information about the afternoon tea, and told us what drinks were included. Tea and coffee. If you want anything else you have to upgrade (and pay more obviously-on top of the £50). I told her that back in March the two glasses of prosecco were included, and she said we must have had the 'High Tea' then. In my head, i am thinking, 'no, no, we had the Afternoon tea', but i was too polite to say anything. I also have the email bookings from both times to prove it. I felt disappointed, but let it go. The sandwiches and cakes arrived and the bread for the sandwiches was dry, cold and hard, and the fillings average. The cakes were not as nice as the ones in March-not bad, just not delicious. We were given one very small milk jug between the two of us. Naturally, i had to keep getting up to ask them for more soya milk for our tea as we had a large pot each. (at least three times). Why not just provide a bigger jug at the start or give us one each? Or perhaps it would have been really nice if one of the staff had come over and asked us if we needed more. Teabags in the teapot, not loose leaf tea. On our last visit, in March, we took our left over cakes back with us in a box as they were delicious, but this time we left the ones we did not eat behind. We stayed about an hour less than last time, and could not wait to get out of there as we were so disappointed. When i went up to pay, i almost felt embarrassed giving them £50 for what was essentially dry sandwiches, a few cakes and tea. This was supposed to be a treat. The staff were polite, but distracted, and non attentive. (it wasn't busy). I should have known it was not going to be the same when i realised they had taken away away the two glasses of prosecco as part of the afternoon tea. Such a mean decision, and they can more than afford to include it for the money they charge. Our experience in March was lovely. Why was it so different this time? Change of management? Just an off day for them? I am afraid to say i won't be taking the risk of going there again to find out. (i was going to give a 2 out of 5, but went up to 3 as the experience in March was so...
Read moreI was in town on Saturday and recommended Cuthberts as a place for lunch to my friend who had never been. We entered, were greeted and sat down at a table. The waitress came and took our orders, and shortly brought out our drinks. My friend ordered the soup of the day, and I ordered a goats cheese and caramelised onion toastie. After around 20 minutes - a reasonable time to wait, they brought out the soup of the day. I waited eagerly for my toastie... nowhere to be seen. Across from us the people who ordered after us started to receive their food. I stopped a waitress and reminded her I was still waiting for my toastie. She went to check and came back to tell me that sometimes things get lost between upstairs, and the kitchen downstairs. I think there may have been an apology in there somewhere but she didn’t seem very concerned. A whole 45 minutes after my friends soup had come out - about 30 minutes after I had reminded the waitress I was missing my order, I received a sad looking untoasted sandwich with a few chips on the side and a bit of lettuce. Definitely not an hours worth of hard work from the chefs. I was extremely surprised by how casual the staff acted about this, and was embarrassed in front of my friend, as he felt very awkward slowly eating his soup for the 45 minutes that I was waiting for my order. I was also disgusted that after such poor service, nothing was even taken off the bill. I recommended Cuthberts because I had been for food before and it was lovely, but after this service I can assure you that I shall not be returning. Honestly the worst service I’ve ever had at...
Read moreThis was the best Afternoon Tea I've had!! It was inventive and had lots of little treasures, it wasn't a boring traditional one with a few crust cut off sorry sandwiches and a couple of boring cakes, they really went to town and had fun with it!! I'm vegan and felt so spoilt with the great food I was given and my fellow diners had the vegetarian and the classic and they both loved their Afternoon Teas as well. There were lots of loose teas to choose from to accompany the food and you can mix the teas, you don't have to stick with one, which I've had in the past with some places. They've also got wine, prosecco and cocktails or soft drinks. Lovely little place, nicely spread out with super friendly attentive staff. I...
