The location and design of the building promise so much, but as you ascend the stairs, past two landings of haphazardly stored spare furniture, doubts start to creep in.
We weren’t eating, so I can’t review the food.
However, at the bar, the service was unenthusiastic and non-committal. Call me old fashioned, but when I’m being charged £8.50 for a glass of red wine, I like some acknowledgement of this ludicrous exchange with perhaps a “thank you”, some eye contact, and - I know I’m asking a lot here - a smile. None were forthcoming.
We sat outside to enjoy the last weak rays of April sunshine. But again, what promised to be a great terrace was littered with uncleared tables, and, worst of all, two filthy wheelie bins and assorted rubbish. Feels weird even typing that, but I’m not kidding. These aren’t just wheelie bins, they look like cast offs from a drugs amnesty.
As it was getting proper chilly on the terrace, we went back inside. To the side of the bar there was a pile of cardboard rubbish (see photo). This sort of thing you might expect in Lidl on a busy Saturday, but in a prime location asking premium prices? No.
I needed the loo and asked the ‘meet and greet’ person at the entrance where I might find them. The grunt I received by way of direction got my back up. If a member of my family communicated like that to me I’d wonder what I did to offend them.
The toilets were fine. For the men. The women’s was occupied by half a dozen workmen trying to sort them out. That meant there was a line of women queuing up to use the disabled toilet (ironic term when you consider how incapable the ‘abled’ toilet was.
In summary, what struck me was how piss poor this place is managed. Attitude comes from the top down in hospitality, and the attitude here spoke of profit over people. No one here is seeing this place through the eyes of the customer. If they did, they would not...
Read moreMy friend and I visited Matou for the first time on a Saturday afternoon, we didn't book in advance, but as we were in the pier head area, we decided to visit Matou. We both haven't visited this eatery. We were looking forwars to some tasty pan Asian foods. Upon entering, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and they directed us to a table with a good view of the river mersey. The restaurant wasn't overly busy. Regarding the food, we ordered a sharing seafood platter and two sides. Pak choi and a portion of fried rice. My friend and I were really surprised how quickly our food arrived after ordering. This tells me the food wasn't freshly cooked and to be honest it wasn't piping hot and didn't taste like it was freshly cooked. The seafood platter apparently a sharing platter cost £35 and the portion size was really small. 2 scallops 2 grilled prawns, it was mostly made up of calamari. The food overall was average with no Asian flavour whatsoever. We both were really disappointed overall with the food. Really average and tiny portions for the money 💰. I was actually still hungry after we left. I'm really sorry to say this but I wouldn't visit this restaurant again nor would my friend. The staff were lovely, no complaints there, and the surroundings, although feeling a bit dated, was okay. This is just my personal opinion. Other people might have had a better experience. I'm sure there are much better authentic pan Asian restaurants in Liverpool if you're looking for this type of...
Read moreAVOID AT ALL COSTS! I visited today with my partner and 2 kids. Was told by the lady manager that we had to have a reservation in order to dine in or even get a drink from the bar (!). Said ok fine, no problem. But just as we were leaving, another couple came in, without any kids, and asked for a table, with no prior reservation. The manager said straight away that they have a table available and proceeded to seat this couple. After questioning why they were allowed to dine without a prior reservation, the lady manager started getting very aggressive and raising her voice quite loud. By this time, other customers were looking on, and so the male manager came over. Instead of trying to resolve the situation, he approached us with a confrontational and very rude attitude. In the end, we ended up leaving the place. but we did speak to a couple of other regular diners as we were leaving, and they confirmed that this place does not like kids dining there as it "ruins their atmosphere'!! They label themselves as a family run, family friendly business, but really they are anything but! The managers/owners are rude and aggressive and lack basic customer service skills. Also, considering there is a pandemic going on, this place has no social distancing measures in place, as both managers kept getting into both mine and my partners face. When I mentioned this to them, they started huffing and puffing about coronavirus being a farce invented by the...
