Myself and some pals recently popped into the excelsior on a pub crawl around town, we had never been in and when we noticed they sold real ale we stopped in straight away. if you checkout the website for the excelsior you will see that it doesn't exactly give you much info other than a message saying that the previous landlords were forced out by punch taverns and now run the Vernon arms just down the road.

Now i am not going to get into a discussion about that or take sides. but what i can tell you that the excelsior is a lovely place to visit. it appears to have been recently renovated and its ample windows and colour scheme and furniture make it a airy and comfortable place to drop in. and what seals the deal is there is real ale available! Our group opted for a pint each of Deuchars IPA which was promptly and efficiently served by the gentleman on the bar that day and was properly dispensed from the pump as well, some bar staff yank the pumps like there is no tomorrow, not so in the excelsior.

It was rather quiet when we visited so i cant comment on when its busy. somewhat overshadowed by the other pubs on dale street its still a great...

I just wanted to write a review following a very swift visit on the day of the parade. We didn’t eat, or drink as they were actually closing the place when we arrived however we were allowed in out of the rain and the very kind lad behind the bar (sorry I didn’t ask your name) got me a mug of hot water to help soothe my painful hands as a suffer from raynauds syndrome. It’s was a kind act, which was probably a bit of an annoying request from at that time of day! Classic liverpool behaviour! Helping those...

At last a proper, traditional pub! The Excelsior is what it is - an honest no-thrills public house with an impressive range of quality beers and value for money wine Whilst there are couple of unobtrusive flat screen TVs featuring sport in the background it is perfectly possible to enjoy a relaxing drink, talk about the sport on the telly, the price of Wellington boots or the general state of the country. Its what pubs are...

The Excelsior used to be a below average student pub. I'm pleased to say it's turned itself around and become a great place to spend a few hours, especially if you like sport. The bar staff are friendly, there's a good selection of ales, lagers & bottled ciders and they've improved the decor as well. It wasn't too busy when I was there but id imagine later in the day or when a local team are playing itd be bouncing.

This place was a pleasant surprise, I just decided to stumble in for a pint. Bright and large space with an expansive central bar that runs 360 degrees. Some folks playing games in the back, a group of girls having a pub day, and a few others watching fifth tier English soccer. Sunshine coming through the windows and a Landlord in hand. Hard to beat.

We popped into The Excelsior hoping to find some food and a pint...we did not find food (we were told they do not serve food) but did decided to stay for a pint. The young gentlemen serving fresh pints of beer and cider were very friendly and pleasant. It was also nice to get to watch golf on the TVs while we sipped our drinks.
