Myself and some pals recently popped into the excelsior on a pub crawl around town, we had never been in and when we noticed they sold real ale we stopped in straight away. if you checkout the website for the excelsior you will see that it doesn't exactly give you much info other than a message saying that the previous landlords were forced out by punch taverns and now run the Vernon arms just down the road.
Now i am not going to get into a discussion about that or take sides. but what i can tell you that the excelsior is a lovely place to visit. it appears to have been recently renovated and its ample windows and colour scheme and furniture make it a airy and comfortable place to drop in. and what seals the deal is there is real ale available! Our group opted for a pint each of Deuchars IPA which was promptly and efficiently served by the gentleman on the bar that day and was properly dispensed from the pump as well, some bar staff yank the pumps like there is no tomorrow, not so in the excelsior.
It was rather quiet when we visited so i cant comment on when its busy. somewhat overshadowed by the other pubs on dale street its still a great...

We didn’t eat, or drink as they were actually closing the place when we arrived however we were allowed in out of the rain and the very kind lad behind the bar (sorry I didn’t ask your name) got me a mug of hot water to help soothe my painful hands as a suffer from raynauds syndrome.
