Usually a great place (a group of us go regularly once every month) with live entertainment and good selection of beers, however, on our last early evening visit, Friday 21st Feb 2020 the place was very busy and the bar packed with people waiting to be served. I assume that this wasn't helped by only having one bar staff serving at the time we were there. When we eventually got served we ordered four drinks, two bottles of Lager, one pint of Doombar, the bar staff said they didn't have Doombar, the same thing happened last month when we ordered Doombar! Next, I asked for my pint of Extra Cold Guinness only to be told that was not available either but I could have regular Guinness instead, so I said I would have that. We all got to our table, when I took a sip of my Guinness, to say it was awful is an understatement! As a Guinness drinker all of my adult life and as such know when Guinness is not good. The thought of waiting around for a long while again to get my drink changed at the bar made me decide not to drink the Guinness I had. When my friends finished their drinks, I left my drink minus one sip, we all left to go elsewhere. I know that staffing can have its problems and trying to run a bar that is understaffed must be difficult, beer barels do occasionally run out but for a city centre bar in the main tourist area of Liverpool that is a tourist attraction itself due to the Beatles connection and on a Friday evening, is pretty poor. My friends and I will be going to The Grapes again this month but if the same things happen again I don't think we will go back. It really is a shame, as The Grapes is a good pub with a...
Read moreThis, I know is a place of history, a shrine to all Beatles and Mersey music lovers. I first visited Liverpool, from Leeds on the death of John Lennon in 1980, yet after many visits, this is the first time I have set foot in the 'hallowed' bar, The Grapes. We were a party of four, simply calling in for a respectful quick drink on Mon 14th Aug in the afternoon. Mathew Street outside was its busy self, yet in The Grapes it was relatively quiet with the expected pop music playing in the background, and just a few other drinkers inside. It felt good to be in this revered place at last, and one could feel the energy that the building held, that all music lovers would respect and understand. I thank Liverpool for keeping such places, as it is more genuine than the Cavern Club and the current Mathew Street that the pub sits on. When I first visited the site of Cavern Walks and the Club, was but a run down car park and back street, nothing more. It is since then that the glitz, we now see, of Mathew Street has been built upon. To me, as a Beatles fan, The Grapes is one of the real, true places to visit on any tour of...
Read morePlease stay clear of this pub. I was out tonight Friday 23rd December around 10 O’clock, I’ve been going to the grapes, I go every year as I’m not a big drinker but enjoy Karaoke. I was on my own and about to walk in, it was empty, when the female door women or whatever were calling them these days oh I think Karen! said to me “ who are you with” I replied “ I’m on my own” she said your not aloud in. To my disbelief I said I’m 51 years of age on my own and your nocking back from the grapes because I’m on my own? She replied yes. Unbelievable but true. What type of place has town become? Totally run by egotistical security staff that for what ever reason they don’t like the look of you your not welcome and totally discriminatory,, never heard of this before and it cost them money as next door welcomed me with open arms. There loss and to be honest I’m gonna post this on our Facebook community group, People help the People, it has over 60,000 members if you look and we are good people, no I’ll say that again we are really good people! Shame on you and I’d sack your security and I’ll never go...
