On my venture to taste London's best burgers, I finally made it to Bar Boulud in Knightsbridge. It's a beautiful simple room with nice warm colours and very friendly and attentive staff. Speaking about staff, the sheer number of staff is almost scary, but as all are very obliging, I did not really mind.
I started with a really great Trinity Hill, Viognier, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand 2008, a delicious white wine that reminded me a lot of dry Rieslings.
For the food, I chose the Frenchie burger. To be fair, it is not a very large burger. But that's probably a good thing. I agree with many others, this burger deserves a mention in any top list. The taste is rich, the bun doesn't dissolve half way through the burger and I cannot think of much that would make this burger better. The Pommes Frittes, as they call it, are thin and crispy, well seasoned and a good complement to the burger.
The strawberry dessert was simply amazing, the pastry - that was mainly for the eye anyway, but nice and crunchy - even came with some gold on top! Whether it was gold or not, you clearly pay for it. But I have to say, it's worth every penny!
To finish off, I ordered an espresso. I didn't expect too much, and I didn't get too much. It is really a pity, that almost no restaurant offers decent coffee. So unfortunately, the last impression was by far not as positive as the rest.
After all, I definitely recommend Bar Boulud. It's a very nice place, the food is great, the wine delicious, the staff friendly, and if you don't order an espresso but go straight for a walk in Hyde Park, you will perhaps have a...
Read moreUsually my fail safe favourite restaurant. The food is un-fault able, the service is great and the place has a nice ambience and is always busy. This time, the main course took SO long to come out, and they were apologetic but they didn't offer a coffee on the house or anything, and the second drink we ordered was forgotten, it's really not the service I expect from somewhere like this. The starter I had was fish soup, which was pretty average, but that's preference as I didn't like the tomato/saffron sort of combination. My boyfriend had a crispy egg with asparagus type thing, it was basically a scotch egg. So that wasn't great. My main was amazing, I had sea bass and it looked so pretty I didn't want to eat it! The steak sort of speaks for itself but they could have jazzed it up a bit, it just came with a salad. Desert was the best part, an amazing sugar snow and limoncello ice cream and meringue creation, and we had the royal as well which was like a giant chocolate and also looked great. I know the burgers are amazing there too. Overall, not the experience I expected or am used to from them. Not 10/10 at all this time around I'm afraid.
*just to amend, they phoned and offered me a Lil something to apologise for the experience, they really care about their patrons, good service speaks...
Read moreExcellent customer service, a warm welcome, really attentive staff, but sadly the food was below expectations.
A group of 6 of us dined there last night. My friends had the burgers and I went for the grilled chicken option with mushrooms and baby potatoes. I ordered some rice additionally as a side dish which the waiter said is a tunesian variety.
The chicken was slightly undercooked and came in an overly salty sauce. I was surprised as I tend to always add salt to my dishes but this was too salty even for my taste.
The mushrooms were deep fried and really oily (looking quite unappetizing) and what was presented as rice, was some sort of grains with a bit of rice.
I don't suffer the celiac disease but I get quite sensitive to certain grains (especially the ones containing wheat) so I wish I was explained better what sort of "rice" I was getting.
Starters were somewhat disapointing too. The steak tartar contained a really generous amount of capers, that overshadowed all the other ingredients.
Overall not what one would expect from a place bearing Boulud's name.
I have to mention though, my dish was kindly removed from the bill and the waiter was quite apologetic so one of my stars goes for issues handling and...
