This place has gone massively downhill. The scrambled tofu is a disgusting paste and it’s almost always empty now expect for kids on the mobile screens. Not sure why people are allowed in here with screens blasting out kids stuff and music when it’s clearly making the place lose money because it’s almost empty. The last few times I’ve been here kids have been on their screens blasting annoying sounds and all those times it’s just been those kids and a few others. If parents don’t know how to entertain their children without blasting them with bright lights and sound then fine, but that shouldn’t happen in a shared space.
Having kids here is fine but why allow multiple screens blasting out garbage when people are trying to eat? Original review follows below as perspective.
It’s a shame that my review has to be changed and following a wave of negative reviews of similar ilk.
I absolutely love this place! I’ve been coming since it was Pogo and I’ve always enjoyed their food and ethic. The place is full of the diversity of Hackney, reasonably priced as the portions are large! Staff are super friendly. Get down early for an epic Sunday breakfast, you won’t be...
Read moreWhat a pleasure it is to be at the Black Cat Café :) I went to the Café with my two sisters-in-law and my little 5-month-old nephew for lunch, and we had a great time! Holly and the team are so kind and welcoming. They have created a lovely calm, relaxing and inclusive atmosphere. The food was totally delicious. I can personally recommend the burger. The chips were so good and I will think about them for a long time. My sisters-in-law had the pie and the dhal, and they loved their dishes too. There was also a great range of drinks available. I had a refreshing strawberry lemonade and would recommend this. Another great thing is the generous portion sizes. It made the dishes really good value for money, as Holly kindly provided recyclable containers for us and we were able to take our leftovers home and have them for lunch the next day. I would strongly recommend Black Cat Cafe to people of any age, for its pleasant and calm atmosphere, friendly vibes, delicious food and great drinks. Perfect place to catch up with friends and family or spend some quality alone time reading...
Read moreLast time I ate properly there I had the most delicious paprika potato wedges with a yummy garlicky dip. And the time before enjoyed the delights of a raw cauliflower salad which was, believe me, incredibly tasty!! and they did something with mushrooms which was a revelation. And I always look forward to seeing what cakes they have, vegan cakes are wicked :). I am not personally a vegan (not even close blushes the meat-eater) but I love Pogo's and I wish everyone realised what a great place it is!! It's run by volunteers, it's a community centre, they have a fascinating community noticeboard with all sorts of events advertised. Yes it's alternative and yes it's politically anti-establishment but to my mind THAT'S A GOOD THING. We have enough Starbucks and Subways to be going on with, go to Pogo's for fabulous healthy food that won't cost you a lot. They also have a loyalty scheme by the way so if you go and you like it, keep going back, one day you'll get a free drink and...
