I visited here on Sunday, looking for a place to grab a coffee and snack while doing some writing on my iPad. I ordered an iced latte which was nice.
It’s quite small inside so sharing of the tables is common which adds to the ‘friendly’ vibe (at first), and so I was sat at the end of one big table.
To point out, I wasn’t using any of the cafes wifi (if they had any, I didn’t check) nor was I using any chargers/electricity. I was there maybe 30/40 minutes while drinking and finishing my coffee when the lady (owner?) came to tell me that because I had finished my coffee and hadn’t purchased anything else, I had to leave to give my seat up if more people came in. At this point it was getting slightly busier but there were still many available seats and a lot of orders were for takeaway. I felt quite embarrassed after this, as there were others sat beside me who heard and I suddenly felt unwelcome and that I had to leave.
I had actually been about to order one of the scones and cream for some lunch but instantly felt uncomfortable doing so as it now came across that I was simply buying to stay.
Sort of ruined my experience there.
I would understand if I had been there hours and not purchased anything else or was using wifi/electric but I was there less than an hour and had bought a (£4) cup of coffee.
I also add that another table of two had been there before me and after and were not asked to leave, and they were even given a tea and coffee on the house so it seems all guests aren’t treated equally.
Avoid cafe if you enjoy being solo and doing some work on a device as they seem to dislike this, other wise it’s a nice vibe with...
Read moreHad a craving for a cream tea this morning so decided to venture here. Despite living close to the flower market for 5 years, I never stopped at Cake Hole. Turns out I've been missing a lot.
The cream tea was by far the best I have had, and I've had a few across the country. The scones were gigantic, warm, fluffy, yet dense and moist. I could only finish one and took the other home. The strawberry jam, which I understand is from Borough Market, was another extremely pleasurable surprise. Paired with lush cream and classic English breakfast tea, it was the perfect Sunday morning treat. I'm bringing my mom here the next time she visits from the States as we don't get cream tea on the other side of the pond and scones with clotted cream are her favorite. Gentlemen at the counter were lovely too. Will definitely be back, maybe to try the...
Read moreWe booked the Cake Hole venue for an afternoon tea for our team of 13. We had an amazing time and all the food and treats were absolutely delicious.
Louise and Mark were perfect hosts and were really good at communicating with us ahead of the day. They were also very accommodating with the menu as we had some food allergies and dietary requirements in our group.
The afternoon was filled with bottomless tea and lemonade, fresh and tasty sandwiches, beautiful scones with plenty of clotted cream and jam, and the most amazing variety of cakes, which included: Chocolate & Raspberry (Vegan), Lemon Drizzle, and Orange, Almond & Earl Grey (Gluten-free). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.
Thank you so much Louise & Mark for a...
