A random man went to open my room door when I stayed here at approximately 5.30am. I was going to stay here by myself so in the system it's just me alone but thankfully my sisters decided to stay with me when this happened.
We were all vulnerable, asleep – when a complete random man decided to try and enter my room. Luckily, one of my sisters were facing the doorway and yelled that there was a man standing there. This obviously frightened him and immediately closed the door and called the lift – we heard the ding of the button.
We confronted the staff member and they were blaming it on us – we apparently didn't close the door – whilst simultaneously admitting to us that their doors don't properly close, which the security staff member said himself to us. Not very comforting.
They were claiming that it was another guest who was "sleep walking". I asked for a formal report since I wanted it written down as proof and I knew full well that they weren't going to show me the CCTV footage due to privacy matters but they declined and said they can't write a report also because of "privacy matters" even though I never asked for the details of the man, only that the incident was written down in writing.
I gave them 48 hours since the incident to straighten their story up because 3 hours after the incident they said they were still "reviewing" the CCTV footage in chronological order. If it were indeed a sleepwalker, why review the footage for so long?
48 hours later, they tell me that the man came from the 5th floor, took the staircase and went to my door. No mention of him trying to open other doors, which made me feel like a proper target for whatever reason.
They gave me another room halfway through my stay when my sisters decided to finally go home and I must say, I was scared for my safety. The staff members were not as caring as they should have been. When handing me over the new key for the new room, one of the staff members said to me that it was a "complimentary upgrade". I'm sorry, but should I be paying for the inconvenience that occurred to me because the hotel hasn't bothered securing their doors?
I used to stay at this hotel a lot, even before when it was run by Ace Hotel. It is safe to say that I will no longer be returning, and I will still be filing a report to the police because I really don't want this happening to anyone else especially if they happen to be...
Read moreUnfortunately, 100 Shoreditch failed to meet our expectations, and the standards have well and truly dropped since the property was the Ace Hotel. This is a pricey hotel - and, well, it’s just not worth the price.
The good things - check in and out were seamless. In particular, the check in we had was great, very thorough. The coffee from the cafe on the ground floor is excellent. The cocktail bar in the basement is also good fun - but the crowd is very young (felt like almost everyone was under 30 except us). The location of the hotel is perfect for enjoying everything in this excellent area.
The disappointing things: No room service from 11pm-7am. Late night snacks or early morning coffee / bites is exactly what you need in room service. It’s pretty astounding that a premium hotel expects it can get away with no room service at these times is pretty crazy.
There’s no phone in the room. To call reception, I had to make the equivalent of an international call on my mobile. It was crazy.
We waited 30 mins for a bucket of ice, and it only showed up after we asked three times.
We were told the gym had five peloton bikes. In actual fact, they had two. And one of them was broken. I reported it broken on the first day, and when I checked on day 3, it was still broken.
I’m sure some interior decorator got some serious cash to decorate this place, but it’s just too much. The oversized art dominates and makes the rooms feel smaller. There was a vase in our room the size of our TV. A waste of space.
The bathroom just didn’t have enough hooks. If we had two showers a day, the towels had no hope of drying in time for the second shower.
The bathroom had a combined shower/bath. I thought they had been phased out in the 90s. It was just frustrating and silly. Even getting soap out of the dispenser was a chore.
There was a general lack of storage. We stayed in the hotel for four nights, and the wardrobe could barely hold that much luggage for one person, let alone two.
The TV system was useless. No additional channels are provided other than free to air, news and sport. They offer a Chrome Cast system - but we tried multiple times and it never worked. The TV was also very slow to respond to the remote. We had to completely turn the TV off and on again multiple times to...
Read moreI don’t usually leave negative reviews, but if I can save one person from the bad experience I had here, it’s worth it. I’m honestly beyond shocked at all of the good reviews.
From the moment I checked in, all the women at the front desk were rude and disinterested, leaving me standing there while they chatted to each other.
The hotel itself feels pretty run down, which they try to camouflage with mid century decor. When I got to my room, it smelled like urine. I let them know at the desk, but they didn’t seem to do anything about it. The sink was stained yellow (photo attached). The bed is also hard as a rock, yet the pillows are so soft they’re nearly flat.
The room is also laid out in a way that makes no sense with outlets - the light switches are hidden behind a shelf and the bed that make it incredibly difficult to get to, and the only outlets near the bed are also buried behind a shelf or a table. There’s no outlet for anything but a shaver in the bathroom, and no handheld mirror so it’s pretty impossible to style your hair in front of a mirror.
The sound proofing is also atrocious; the room next to mine was playing Nicki Minaj into all hours, but I could even hear their phone alarm going off. I could hear every footstep and knock in the hallway.
Finally - the water situation is so bizarre. They tell you you can refill it which is fine, but my room was so far from the water fountain, it was a pain to do. It would’ve been nice if they at least refilled it for you for arrival and when housekeeping came.
Finally, all of this could’ve probably been forgiven if the staff was friendly, but very few were. A few men at the front desk were nice, but honestly every woman I interacted with was beyond rude. They nearly lost half my laundry, tried to argue with me that I wasn’t staying in the room I said I was when my keycard stopped working, and just overall had such poor attitudes.
This was a novel but in short, obviously, I wouldnt stay here again, and would recommend anyone against it. I’ve stayed in hostels that had better vibes...
