The Chesham Arms is located in a quaint residential street close to historical Sutton House in Hackney. The nearest station is Hackney Central on the the newly named Mildmay Line, Homerton station is also close by.
This mid-terrace Victorian pub was built in 1866. In 2012, the pub closed after being purchased by a property developer who wanted to turn the pub into flats. Following a high-profile campaign to save it, led by the local community with support from Hackney Council, the pub reopened in June 2015. This is Hackneyās first pub to receive Asset of Community Value status.
This is a one bar pub that is traditionally dedicated. The bar is set out in a āCā shape around a centrally located servery. The decor consists of a bare-boarded floor, conventional furniture, a stylish corner banquette, exposed brick fireplaces and a Joanna in the corner. Around the walls are an eclectic mix of art, prints and mirrors. At the rear of the pub is a cosy covered decked area that leads to a spacious beer garden.
The beer selection is excellent and offers premium continental beers, London brews and for the cultured imbiber, five cask ales. I decided on a Paulaner, my pint was great, price point was average. The food option is @yardsalepizza who will deliver your Pizza to the pub.
We arrived just after 1pm on a pleasant Saturday lunchtime in August. The pub was fairly quiet inside, the majority of punters were sat outside in the garden. There is a welcoming homely feel to the pub that made settling in very easy. The service was first class, the team were very friendly and personable.
We loved our visit to this charming backstreet local. The setting is warm and welcoming, the beer choice is broad and the hospitality made us feel right at home. With unscrupulous developers putting profits above people, it just goes to show you what the power of community can do. The @cheshamarms is fantastic pub, a real success story, put this pub atop your pubs to visit list.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe really like this pub. But last night was not the best experience. We arrived to find they were closing - which was totally fine. It was raining so we decided just to go home and sheltered in the pub doorway whilst we waited for an Uber. We were not being rowdy, we were just chatting while becoming thoroughly soaked. I knocked on the door and tried to open it, hoping we might be able to shelter inside while we waited, but no one answered and it was locked - which was also fine as it was wishful thinking. Some time later, the door suddenly opened, and I found myself falling backwards onto the floor. They guy who opened the door initially said he didnāt know anyone was there, but when questioned as to why he had opened the door, said that he was was looking to see why we were still there (so clearly knew someone was there). He made us feel as if we were being a nuisance and causing trouble, when we were honestly just waiting for our ride in the pouring rain. He also opened a door knowing someone was there, and whilst no serious damage was done, caused some pain and discomfort. It didnāt help to hear the crowd inside jeering at our explanations as to why we were still there, and asking why we were being āchecked onā. Again,we like this pub - but this treatment was...
