Grandma's Food & Bar 阿婆私房菜 — Restaurant in London

I recently discovered this Chinese restaurant, and I was genuinely impressed by the quality of the food. I ordered skewers-grilled lamb and squid tentacles-and both were packed with flavor. The aroma of cumin was rich and inviting. The lamb skewers were incredibly tender, while the squid tentacles had a satisfying chew. Everything arrived piping hot, which really whetted the appetite.

I also had the stir-fried eggplant with long beans. The portion size was generous and great value for money. The eggplant was delicious-its skin wasn’t soggy at all-and the long beans were well-seasoned, making it a perfect companion to rice.

Another standout dish was the "Country-style Chicken". The flat noodles were pleasantly chewy, and the chicken was tender and juicy. The mushrooms were fresh and flavorful. The only slight downside was the potatoes-they were soft and fluffy, but perhaps a bit too soft for my taste, lacking a bit of bite.

Since I can't handle spicy food well, I asked the waiter for a less spicy version. He was very patient and accommodating, and made sure the spice levels were toned down. The service overall was excellent-friendly and efficient-and dishes came out quickly.

The food is amazing, extremely well priced, and the portion sizes are large.

I usually get sick from eating greasy food, but Grandma's Food and Bar food is very well cooked.

Everything we ordered came hot, deep in flavour and we thoroughly enjoyed the food.

However, there were two small reasons why it wasn't a full 5/5. I just wish the décor was slightly more welcoming, it all feels a little basic. Staff, are lovely, but there were long waits. For example, we were sat down (only 1 of 2 tables in the restaurant) and there was a 20 minute wait for our order to be taken. Then after we finished eating, we kept trying to get the attention of staff to get the bill, but were ignored. At no point did any staff member check if we were enjoying the food or that we had everything we needed. As a result, we only had one drink, but would have ordered more if someone checked on us as it's hard to get staff's attention.
