London Pub MapLondon Pub Map
🚇 All Saints 🍺 £4.50 Carlsberg The Hope & Anchor is located on a quiet side street just south of Chrisp Street Market in Poplar. The nearest station is All Saints on the DLR. This pub was built in 1869 and was remodelled in the 1930’s. The pub has faced some challenges and name changes over the years and closed for a couple of years in 2014. The pub is known locally as “The Dead House.” In Victorian times, there was a mortuary on Poplar High Street which, from time to time, became overwhelmed with bodies. When this happened, corpses were brought to the pub and stored downstairs in the cellar. The decor includes a mix of boarded and carpeted flooring, ample conventional seating, deep red and cream-coloured walls, a variety of West Ham memorabilia, a stage and two Fives dartboards. The servery is located on the right-hand side and features a solid mahogany counter. At the rear of the pub, there is a walled beer garden, where a ship’s anchor leans against one of the walls. The beer selection consists of a lineup of familiar keg beers and one cask ale. I opted for a Carlsberg—my pint great, price point was very reasonable at under a fiver. While no food is served here, Tayto crisps were available if you’re feeling peckish. I arrived around 2.30pm on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon in June. The atmosphere was laidback and relaxed with friendly locals sat on stools around the bar and a few catching a few rays in the beer garden. The horse racing was on the telly which had the interest of a few punters, one of which was having no luck. The service was first class, I received a warm and friendly welcome. The pub hosts regular entertainment which includes live music, Jazz sessions, charity events which are very popular with the local community. This is a cracking East End boozer and community hub that truly looks after its locals. Although my visit was brief, I got a real sense of what this pub represents — welcoming locals, cheap pints, excellent service, and plenty to keep you entertained. A must-visit if you’re in the area. Found this pub on google whilst staying in East London. Came in to 4 locals who welcomed us. Place filled up as there was a singer on at 9pm. Omg had a blast dancing the night away. Drinks good prices and amazing landlord who was super welcoming. If we’re ever in this neck of the woods (bit of a long way from Cardiff), we’d be back in a heartbeat. Thanks for being so welcoming.

Let's start with a laugh. A great pub, the Hope and Anchor next to All Saints Church, beer is blessed! Great welcome and a great bunch of people. A good few keg beers on the T bars and even a cask ale potentially on offer. A pub of raconteurs, lovely tales. A great place to visit.
