An evening of two halves!
I visited Humble Grape on Liverpool Street on a Tuesday. Great start to the evening, lovely cosy venue, amazing wines and the food was delicious. Staff were attentive (it is a table service venue) and polite. Me and my friend were thrilled we had found the perfect place for future meet ups.
2 hours later this all changed. The staff had clearly decided they wanted to close, it was 8.30 at this point. They talked openly about how they would shut when we (us and another couple in the bar) had finished. One staff member even suggested blowing the candles out. When a 3rd party came in they rolled their eyes. A member of staff looked at me while yawning theatrically. Table service stopped with no-one checking if we’d like more drinks. I signalled to a staff member behind the bar that I’d like to order some more drinks but he seemed to expect me to shout this over vs come to take our order at the table so I ended up having to go to the bar to order. Our plates of bar snacks were silently cleared away without checking we had finished even though my friend was still eating (still actually chewing while the plates were removed), the staff member had obviously decided it was time to get the washing up done and plates were clanged around pretty loudly (which again I felt was a hint to us to leave!). And finally when we received the bill we were overcharged by £10 for our prosecco even though there is only one type on offer on the menu....
It is a relatively new venue for the chain so they obviously haven’t got the staffing side of things right quite yet, I liked the venue apart from this so will pop back in a few months to see if things had changed. I wrote this review to prevent others having such a strange experience while they get up and running. It was my birthday too so particularly...

Marcello, a true superhost, sets the tone with his remarkable energy and infectious enthusiasm. He’s not only incredibly entertaining but also deeply knowledgeable about wine and food, creating an experience that’s both refined and fun. And then there’s Chef Courtney, whose beautifully crafted dishes are a highlight. From the tender, perfectly braised short rib to her on-point medium steak, she truly understands what her guests want. I like my steak medium, and she delivered it just right—a true sign of someone attuned to her guests’ needs.
Karen, with her extensive wine knowledge, recommended some fantastic selections tailored to my taste, and their wine list is versatile enough to suit every palate and pocket.
Every visit here is a joy, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. I think you should treat yourself and...
Read moreBEWARE IF YOU SUFFER ALLERGIES. My brother ended up in hospital overnight thanks to this restaurant. I went with my brother who has a fatal sesame allergy. We checked twice with the waitress and kitchen whether there was any sesame in the dishes we had ordered, and they said there was not - the only thing they couldn't guarantee were things manufactured off their premises (like the bread). Shortly after starting to eat a dish they had said was OK, my brother started feeling weird. We asked for a third time whether the dish was OK and the waitress disappeared for quite some time to check. Eventually another waitress came down and after a long while admitted there was in fact tahini (sesame paste) in the dish. At this point we had to run out of the restaurant to get an ambulance an my brother was in hospital overnight on a drip as he had a very severe reaction. I believe this was a mistake but they need to realise that it is dangerous to be this irresponsible as he quite easily could have died. Luckily the ambulance arrived in minutes and so it turned out OK - but someone else may not be so lucky. Would never eat here again it was...
