Mexclub Hackney — Restaurant in London

Today was a lesson in seafood expertise and false advertising. I stopped by MexClub in Hackney for some tacos—£9 for two, which seemed fair. One beef, one prawn.

Except, they called the prawn taco King Prawn taco. Instantly, I knew something was off. King prawns are meaty, sweet, distinct—they don’t magically shrink into cold water shrimp-sized bites when cooked.

When I questioned them, they pleaded ignorance, said they were just employees, and directed me to their boss. They did show a stock order list from Bookers, which had king prawns listed, but conveniently, the actual packet was nowhere to be found.

So, either Bookers or MexClub is guilty of false advertising. I wasn’t having it. Left them a one-star review, told them to check with their supplier, and walked away knowing I wasn’t fooled.

I love seafood. I know the size, texture, and flavor of genuine king prawns—I’ve had them properly prepared before, whether in tacos at Homies on Donkeys in Leytonstone or in king prawn curry at home. MexClub? They’re selling shrimp and calling it king prawns.

I can’t say enough good things about the tacos at MexClub! The flavors are authentic and bold—exactly what you’d hope for in great Mexican street food. The tortillas were fresh and slightly charred (in the best way), the meat was juicy and well-seasoned, and the toppings balanced everything perfectly without overpowering the main ingredients.

I tried the nachos and beef birria tacos, and both were absolutely delicious. The salsa had just the right amount of heat and packed with flavor. You can tell they put care into every detail.

One of the best tacos I've ever eaten and coming here for the first time and know next time I visit London I will be back for me. The staff were very patient and friendly explaining the deals and you can see the care that goes into each item through the stand. The meat is juicy and tender unlike any I have had before. I recommend trying guacamole on whichever item you get that is pork or beef based as it helps to cool down if you aren't as keen on spice. But overall a wonderful experience and loved...
