I was refused entry to this venue because I was carrying what the bouncer called a “man bag.” Not only is this policy outdated and gendered, but the staff member also made an assumption about my gender without asking — an action that is both disrespectful and discriminatory.
This kind of rule and its enforcement raise serious concerns under the Equality Act 2010, which protects against discrimination based on sex, gender reassignment, race, and sexual orientation. By applying a gender-specific rule (“man bag”), your venue is engaging in indirect discrimination, as it enforces stereotypical expectations about appearance that disproportionately affect certain genders and gender expressions.
Furthermore, the interaction left me with the clear impression that racial bias may also have influenced how the policy was applied. It is well-documented that dress codes and entry policies are often enforced more harshly toward people from minority ethnic backgrounds. If this was the case here, then it constitutes direct racial discrimination, which is unlawful.
The combination of sexism, potential racism, and the risk of discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals is unacceptable. I am requesting:
A full written explanation of the “man bag” policy, including its legal justification.
Details of any Equality, Diversity & Inclusion training given to door staff.
An outline of steps you will take to ensure that policies and enforcement are free from gender, racial, or sexuality-based bias.
If this matter is not addressed satisfactorily, I will have no choice but to escalate it to the local licensing authority and, if necessary, seek legal advice. Venues operating in the UK have a legal and moral duty to ensure their policies are lawful, inclusive, and applied equally to...
Read moreI used to go to this O'Neills fairly regularly, but not been in a few months and went with a few friends on Saturday night. The door staff were extremely aggressive and rude -- they treat you like you're a bunch of criminals before you've even walked in the door by the way they talk to and act towards you.
When one of the door staff was looking through my very expensive wallet, he shoved his fingers in each slot with such force and aggression, I thought the stitching was going to break -- what need is there for that to treat customers' belongings with such disrespect and force? When I mentioned it to him, there wasn't an apology or anything, he had the audacity to snap and said "I need to check it properly!" Disgusting behaviour. The slots in my wallet are now loose thanks to that. It’s NOT OK to damage customers’ property.
The security guy is someone who used to work behind the bar, unsure of his name - maybe Matt. I’ve seen similar reviews on here about the appalling attitude and disrespect for customers’ belongings - easy to work out the common factor here.
We're respectful gentlemen in our early 40s, not a bunch of young, rowdy and mouthy teenagers that can't handle their alcohol. There was a live band on (who were actually decent) and you'd think that might draw customers in, but the place was empty at 10pm as you'll see from the pics -- no surprise there if they're treating customers like that.
We had a terrible experience and certainly won't be going back. We'll take our manners and money elsewhere to establishments that actually respect decent...
Read moreWas looking forward to an afternoon out watching Scotland play at O'Neill's as I have visited many times for food and drinks when in Bromley, but this will be my last visit. Started off well reserved a table and great view of screen as table was at front. But that was about all which was good.
Ordered food but when arrived, Nachos freezing, even the melted cheese was freezing. so off I went to the bar to take it back, to let know this should be hot food, the person behind the bar just took it from me with no apologies, stood for few minutes but no one said anything so I went back to my table, thinking they will bring it over.
The same person I had handed it to behind the bar arrived at my table holding the bowl with the sleeve from his hoodie and just placed on table and left.
I couldn't believe this as this is so unhygienic.
I didn't eat any of it. When another person came to clear table I made a point to let them know that I hadn't eaten any and to let the person know who brought the bowl over that its not good to handle food plates with sleeves from clothes.
I went back to bar 20 minutes later to order a drink, I was served by the person who had brought the food over and still no apology... I believed this to be a manager or assistant manager. I will defiantly not be back to O'Neill's in Bromley , the only reason I have given 1 start for food/service as no...
