Papilio Beckenham — Restaurant in London

This use to be one of my favorite places in Beckenham, but after numerous unfair, unkind, rude and offensive treatment by the main owner, I will not be promoting with my husband to go to Papilio anymore.

There are three incidences that led me to leave this review: Last time i was there, my blue tooth head phone wasnt working well, so i was on a call just like another women was, that women complained and i was told rudely to not go again unless i have a headphone. It was outdoors, people are loud everywhere, not sure why the owner choose to take sides.

I'm told the non bar table outside is for people who are going to eat lunch. So i went on a day i wanted to have lunch there, the business partner allowed me to sit there and made me feel welcomed, owner than moved me away, said that table is booked. Later one lady came and had the table for herself and sat there all afternoon. We would have spent the same, lunch and drinks, and i was there first, invited to sit there, but got moved away.

I suggested to my husband we take his family there as its nice ambience to sit outside. When we got there there was one bar table left, owner told us we cant sit outside, when we went inside, owner once again pointed us to section near the bathroom, although most of the restaurant was empty. I asked the owner if we can be by the window, but he told me his business partners are having a meeting next to it. So we couldnt sit in the table adjacent. Most restaurants, bars, dont use their best seats for their internal meetings, but leave those seats for the guests. Not Papilio.

Aside from the main owner, i do think the staffs are lovely. Friendly, warm, and kind.

However, after these three incidences, not to mention always being assigned the seats by the restroom when there are seats everywhere, Papilio is no longer a place we would be going to anymore even if it once was the most perfect place in Beckenham for a date night, great place for lunch, great place when i want my own space, i am tired of the unfair, unkind, rude treatment from the owner.

Is it because i am not spending enough? Or is it because both my husband and I are minority races? Perhaps it's...

I went to this restaurant for work Christmas Party. I am on a gluten-free diet and this was communicated twice with the restaurant prior to that night. Their service was very poor which can be understandable when busy. My starter came 20 minutes after everyone else on our table finished theirs and my main course came half hour into others having their food with gluten contained gravy on it! I double checked with them before having my food and was told it had gluten and they changed my food to one without gluten which was 1/3 of the original portion in size.

I question the size and their service and a lady came to me and said she didn't care f their service was bad as their service was good considering how busy they were! At that point everyone finished their food and I said I didn't want to eat anymore. As I was sitting there I started writing the review as I knew I would eave it off if left for later not knowing they would see the review immediately after published. The manager who was a very impolite guy came to me and said " GET OUT OF HERE,GET LOST!" I did leave the restaurant in tears and had a terrible night there. My husband said I should have called the police for their behaviour as all I done was writing a review stating the facts I saw there but I was too shaken to think.

My husband and I are taking this further and won't let him carry on working as if nothing...

Twenty three of us (family and friends) dined at Palilio yesterday, Christmas Eve, for dinner. We had the best time! We were seated across two tables such that we were able to communicate with each other throughout. We picked from a set menu, but the choices were great covering traditional Christmas dinner, pescatarian, vegetarian and vegan options and the cocktails were unbelievable!

The venue is very beautiful as is the decor and the staff extremely friendly. Service with a smile every time, even though it was exceptionally busy!

We were looked after to a "t" especially by Tasha, who deserves a big mention. She was so accommodation as I kept adding to my numbers! Tasha was just on tap the whole time and took minutes to action any requests made. Her customer service and approachable demeanour was second to none. She made us feel at home and definitely added to our wonderful experience. She is a real gem and worth her weight in gold! We will definitely come again especially because of the service we received from Tasha. My family members and friends travelled from wide and far - they marvelled at the service!

I would highly recommend this beautiful bar/restaurant in the heart of Beckenham and would give 10/10 for everything! It is an excellent place to dine.
