pilpel is a vegan and vegetarian falafel & houmous bar that serves colourful bowls and pitas in spitalfields. there’s also stores in fleet street and st paul’s.

as soon as I walked in the ladies said hello and asked if they could help. you can choose your falafel to come in a pita (£4.80) or a container (£5.80). the pita is a choice of white or wholemeal. I went for the container where you get the pita on the side. the falafel is served with houmous, salad and sauce. the salad choices which are included are green salad, tabouleh, red + white cabbage, carrot, pickled cucumbers, jalapeños, onions & chickpeas and the sauces are red or green chilli & tahini. there’s also additional toppings you can choose from ranging from 60p to £1. I got aubergine and guacamole. when I ordered I was given a falafel to eat while I waited for mine to be made. the falafel was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside which is what you want. nothing is worse than a dry tasting falafel. it tasted fresh and the serving size was huge – I couldn’t finish it in one go.

there’s not much seating inside, so it’s nice to take it on the go and eat in the sunshine. try to beat lunch time rush and go around 11am or after 2pm. I’d eat here again but maybe go for the pita instead of the container as it’s a big bowl of plastic. hopefully one day they’ll change the container to a more eco...

I always used to say that I didn't like falafel until I was offered a taster as I walked past Pilpel. Absolute game changer!

The falafel itself was suprisingly tasty and not greasy at all considering that it is fried. There are pretty much 2 main options for how you can have it. Either in a pitta (white or brown) or in a container (with or without pitta). I find that the container is slightly too much and much prefer the pitta as it's easier to get the flavour of everything together.

This is where it really comes into it's own. Houmous comes as standard along with tahini and chilli sauce if that's what floats your boat. I tend to lay off the tahini as I think both sauces tend to soak into the bread making it slightly messy. If I wasn't usually eating in work this wouldn't be a problem at all! You can then follow this up with a selection of fresh salad items adding different textures and enhancing the flavour.

There's a number of other options that you can pay a little extra to get such as guacamole, sun dried tomatoes and aubergine although in my opinion they aren't really worth the additional cost. Prices are really good, especially for the area with the pitta coming in at £4.80 and the container only £1 more.

If you haven't tried Pilpel yet you need to get yourself along and you won't be sorry. In fact you might even...

Inside the Spitalfields market in the Shoreditch neighborhood there is a falafel stand, suitable for lovers of Mediterranean/Lebanese/Israeli food. My grandchildren really like falafel in pita or on a plate. Also the Sabih dish with - fried eggplant, hard-boiled egg, and tahini, in pita is delicious. The place is clean and nicely arranged. The service is fast and the price is cheap. We took 3 large portions, and packed some of them to eat at home.

Its a very good 4.5 stars from me, great food, very good staff and clear communication. Cant ask for more. 0.5 stars deducted as falafel got dry while taking a take away, but i understand that if we dine in it will be crispy and hot. So next time i will dine in and i am sure i will update the rating to 5 stars. Good work team.
