Ordered two cakes from Primrose bakery for separate events I had in the same week. The first cake I’ll be reviewing was a 12x12 square vanilla cake I ordered with red icing and sugar flowers. This cake was meant to be delivered between 11-2pm but it came 2 hours later than expected which I understand isn’t the bakeries fault at all and could be due to traffic etc. however I didn’t get notified or alerted so felt that perhaps the bakery should try to contact customers in future when there is a delay, as it just makes it nicer to be alerted of that instead of panicking wondering if it will come. The cake arrived and unfortunately the side of it and the front had wilted, I didn’t think it that bad so just put it in the fridge ready for the party the next day. The next day came, we took the cake out of the fridge and upon laying it out onto the table for the party I noticed that the icing around the front of the cake had actually started to wilt too and completely fallen down. I do understand that these things can happen due to transportation of the cake etc so i definitely don’t think it reflects on their skills as a bakery. Also this is due to me not researching enough or inquiring so I completely know this is my fault for not asking them before I ordered, but their square cakes do not appear to come with any filling as upon cutting into the cake, we discovered it was just a big block of vanilla sponge. No filling or buttercream in the middle which meant that it was quite dry to eat. I think it would of been better if the cake had some sort of creamy filling with jam, just to make it less sweet and dense but I also understand that this was a very big cake so it could’ve been susceptible to more damage had it had more layers. Most people at the party still loved the cake and complimented it because it was very pretty and the sugar flowers were beautiful, but it definitely wasn’t what I expected especially because I paid £100 for it and to discover it was just a block of sponge with icing on it I felt a bit conned and felt like the cake didn’t actually look very professionally made at all due to the icing wilting which is unfortunate😭 it actually looked homemade which was a shame as I know they make beautifully designed cakes. The second cake I ordered was beautiful and I was so happy with the decoration and writing. It looked great! Was super happy with the delivery too as it came just on time and wasn’t damaged. (I do have some feedback on the chocolate buttercream but this is just my personal opinion and others very well may prefer it to taste the way it did) the second cake was a chocolate heart cake, the cake was a lovely texture chocolate sponge. I personally found the taste of the chocolate buttercream really weak in chocolate flavour, it looks lovely and deep coloured but when you taste it it honestly just tastes like a block of butter. I would prefer it to have a richer chocolate flavour but it still tasted nice. Overall I do think this bakery is quite overpriced for what you receive which is a shame, and I don’t think I’ll be making a purchase again. I have seen reviews about rude staff and I didn’t experience this myself. I did use their WhatsApp to contact them about a change I had in design for the first cake and they seemed pleasant enough and were accommodating to my changes. I do really appreciate that they offer a delivery service as that can really be helpful when you...
Read moreI hate to leave this review because we are local and we do want to support our local shops... but honestly, Primrose Bakery quite possibly makes the driest cupcakes and cakes I've ever bought.. We have gone here a dozen times, hoping for fresh, non-dry and crumbly cupcakes and cakes, but regardless of the size of the cupcakes (mini or regular) or whatever cake we purchase (expensive birthday cakes twice for example - both dry), they are always dry and crumbly.
I've waited to write this review for a couple years because I kept holding out hope that perhaps it's just that day's batch that are dry. But this year I decided not to purchase our upcoming birthday cake from the shop because I didn't want to be disappointed a third time around. So today, after stopping by there to grab sweet snacks for my family, with hope that they might be moist this time, I wasn't surprised to find that the almost £10 I spent on a few mini-cupcakes was spent on dry ones. Literally felt no surprise. So, alas, I feel confident about my choice NOT to purchase my birthday cake from Primrose Bakery this year. I also finally feel comfortable posting this review after years of testing them and hoping for better but always receiving the same dry cupcakes and cakes.
I hope this review will help the lovely bakery take the dryness issue seriously. Especially since it doesn't seem like I am the only one who feels the cupcakes and cakes are dry.
I wonder why the cupcakes and cakes are so dry? Are they old as in, not fresh that day? If they aren't fresh, they might consider making that known and then marking the price down. On another note though, the icing, though slightly dry, is great in flavour. Also, the place is super cute. It definitely has a lovely store front window. The staff are alright, not friendly in the way you hope a neighborhood bakery to be, but also not exactly rude.
We bought 3 mini cupcakes (a variety of flavours) today as well as a regular sized one. They were all dry. In the past we have bought two of their beautiful layered cakes (over a two year period) and they all went uneaten at the parties because of the dryness. It turned out to be a very expensive waste of money on beautiful looking cakes.
The two stars are for the location, the storefront look, and the lovely appearance of what ends up being dry, mostly un-edible (my toddler literally spit out the dry cake part today)...
Read moreOrdered cupcakes for my sons 21st, I have been ordering from Primrose for special occasions for at least 5 years and travel from East London to collect. Unfortunately my last experience was a double whammy of disappointment. When I entered the shop there was one customer being served who had a dog which was on a long lead, this prevented me from standing directly behind the customer being served but I was acknowledged by the server. Whilst waiting my turn a man walked into the shop, straight past me and approached the counter while the man with the dog was still being served, showing no consideration to the queue I had formed. considering the server was aware I had entered the shop first, she choose to serve this man before me, additionally there was a mix up with his order and I had to wait for them to sort it out, at no time being acknowledged by the server that I was still waiting. Honestly I felt that my natural makeup played a part here, being of colour and maybe being slightly down dressed. Eventually a girl came upstairs and served me, I was not happy with my experience so made a complaint to her, and the way she choose to deal with this was absolutely shocking, with a half hearted apology then giving me the death stare because I was not happy with her flippant attitude, I kind of knew then that I would never buy from this establishment again especially witnessing how courteous they where to the man that skipped the queue. In addition to ordering cakes for my sons birthday, I would often pop into the bakery when working local to the area, but unfortunately, the quality of the cakes this time were hit and miss, the red velvet was hard, dry and did not taste fresh as was the vanilla the multi colour cake was good though. Will need to try and test a new supplier as Primrose won’t get my money again mainly due to the lack of good...
