An Absolute Gem: The Lansdowne Pub in Primrose Hill
If you’re looking for a perfect pub experience in Primrose Hill, The Lansdowne is, without question, the place to be. From the moment you step through the door, there’s an unmistakable warmth that hits you — the bustling atmosphere, the charm of the interior, and most importantly, the absolutely stellar staff who bring their A-game every single day.
Despite being a large, open bar, The Lansdowne manages to feel wonderfully snug and inviting, thanks to thoughtful touches like the real log fire crackling away and the heavy door curtain that keeps the chill firmly outside. It’s the kind of place that instantly makes you feel at home, whether you’re escaping the cold or simply unwinding after a long day.
The team here are a shining example of how exceptional hospitality should be done. Friendly, professional, and so switched on, they make every visit a real treat. They’ve mastered that rare balance of being attentive without hovering and seem to anticipate exactly what you need — whether it’s a perfectly pulled pint delivered with a smile to your table or a recommendation from the brilliant menu.
Compared to certain other establishments (only a few hundred yards away), where the staff can seem disinterested, clueless, or simply lazy, The Lansdowne feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s clear this team genuinely care about their customers and take pride in creating an experience that’s second to none.
The food? Top-notch. The drinks? Always on point (wine list +++). The atmosphere? Electric, without being overwhelming. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick drink, a leisurely Sunday lunch, or a lively evening with friends, The Lansdowne always delivers.
It’s a masterclass in how a pub should be run. Do yourself a favour and pay them a visit — you’ll leave with a full stomach and a renewed faith in great service.
My only gripe? Charging for a quick squirt of soda in a white wine spritz… just a niggle.
Heads up. Also just check that you are not automatically stuffed with an optional service charge. Check...

Granted it is New Year’s Day and can appreciate not everyone has the most high of spirits given the festivities the night before, but this is the service industry we put on a smile and fake it for our customers even if we aren’t feeling it. First off they couldn’t find the reservation, (which was remediated), we requested to be seated sooner if it could be accommodated (and there were empty tables) however they declined. We asked about the roast to ensure we would be able to order it, and indicating it is the sole reason we booked, they assured us there was plenty of roast left. I would like to point out no other tables were seated in the 30 mins we waited for our reservation, they then told us 30 mins later no roast was available, it was all sold out. This was the biggest disappointment of all, and came across deceitful and disingenuous. My friend and I had a Bloody Mary while we waited and I don’t know what was in it but there was a massive amount of little white chunks (horseradish, garlic? Something else? Who knows, but it made using a straw impossible and it was a weird crunchy drink, which I wouldn’t associate the two together (I can’t say I’ve had the experience of chewing my drink before), needless to say less than adequate. Furthermore the Bloody Mary mix was left out on the counter and not kept on ice or refrigerated which gave me room for pause but I figured it’s probably a popular drink today and was probably still fresh- it wasn’t! I had such high hopes given the reviews and was so severely...

The nearest tube is Chalk Farm which is a five minute walk. . This pub was built in 1861 and was a Charringtons pub for many years. The pub is clad in beautiful tiles, if you look just below the awning you can see the original Charrington’s signage. . The decor here is traditional with some contemporary touches. The walls are off white with cobalt blue panelling which is also around the bar. Dotted around the pub are chalkboards detailing the food menu and wine list. . The beer choice was solid, 9 keg and 2 cask. I went for a Moretti which was a good pint and just north of six quid. As it’s Christmas time, there was a caldron of mulled wine on the bar for those who fancy a festive tipple. As this is a gastro, the food menu is a fair few notches above your normal pub fayre. The food was popular, most of the clientele were dining with the exception of a couple of tables. . The service was excellent, the chap who served me was personable and getting in the spirit with his Christmassy shirt. The atmosphere was buzzy, the crowd was a mixture of couples, families and a large group of French guys enjoying the fine cuisine. . The @lansdownenw1 is a handsome Gastropub in a pretty neighbourhood which makes this place an attractive proposition. If you just want to come here for a beer or a glass of wine then there are provisions for you, this place would be great for date night. If you’re exploring the area then definitely pop in for a visit. . ℹ️ Info correct on...
