🚇Old Street ❤️ I first visited The Prince Arthur back in February 2013. The Guv’nor at the time was Dixie Dean who used to be a decent featherweight boxer back in the 1960’s. Me and a few pals were sat in the corner of the pub and Dixie came over to have a chat, he ended up telling us all about his amazing life, he was such a funny fella and had us in stitches. . Dixie had 141 amateur fights and won the London ABA finals, he turned pro and beat notable boxers of the time. He trained at the famous now closed Thomas A Beckett pub in Old Kent Road. He fought in The Albert Hall, The Lyceum Ballroom and was a well known figure on London’s boxing scene. . When Dixie gave up the boxing he moved to Benidorm in Spain, he ran three successful nightclubs long before the tower blocks went up that you see there today. Eventually he moved back to London and ran The Prince Arthur for 35 years, he had a few stories to tell us about his time here, he was such a lovely man and we could have listened to him all day. . We returned a year later and found that Dixie had sold up, we were a bit gutted to be fair but were well looked after by the new management. . @theprincearthurshoreditch had a new paint job last year, so I though I’d share. The decor here is contemporary with traditional touches set over two floors, there is a cute little balcony also. The beer and food are decent and the atmosphere is convivial. Well worth a visit here folks, don’t forget to check out the photo of Dixie in his...
Read moreOn Weds April 13, I tried to a make a booking (via designmynight) for my partner & I for Easter Sunday vegan roast at 2p. On the same day Kate from this pub replied to my inquiry as follows: "Happy to take a booking for Sunday but we don't open until 4pm. It's also super quiet on Sundays so you won't need to book. Hope to see you after 4." We live on the west side and my partner wanted to go somewhere closer and earlier in the day but I chose this pub after looking online for vegan options. We walked 1.5 hours along the canal and figured we would be very tired and hungry - ready to enjoy a lovely Sunday Easter Roast after a long walk and having to wait until 4p to eat. You can imagine my shock and anger when I arrived at the pub and found a sign on the door "SUNDAY CLOSED HAPPY EASTER AND SEE YOU TUESDAY". I highly recommend never going to this pub. We went nearby (6 min walk from this pub) to the Angel for vegan roast and I can recommend the Angel = nice atmosphere, friendly staff, good food and most importantly - they are open when they say...
