The Beer House London Victoria — Restaurant in London

I'm sitting in The Beer House in Victoria Station, London. The server has just taken the empty glasses from my table 10 minutes after sitting down. Other then I there are 8 people sitting at five tables, already served. (Keep this fact in mind.) First attempt to get food: I've ordered 'Beer battered cod with chips and mushy peas' and asked for extra peas instead of the chips. She told me that they can't do changes, because '[they] have so many orders, it would be confusing'. I gave up easily at first and referred back to the menu. Decided on having a cheese plate and a side salad instead. I got billed 19.50 --a cheese plate and a Caesar salad. As I've corrected her to 'side salad' she said they don't have such a thing, so I had to open the menu for the third time now to show her. I've finally managed to order and paid at the bar. In a few seconds one of the kitchen staff (clearly not a chef) ran outside and told the server '[they] don't have any side salad'. From this we went into a debate, that if you have the ingredients of a Caesar salad, or a Superfood salad, etc. how can you not make a side salad. I've ended up explaining to them what is a side salad and the kitchen staff finally agreed to make it as at this point it seemed easier than paying me back the whole bill and letting me go. So I was told that the whole deal is going to take a about 35-40 minutes -- expecting me to back up so they don't have to do any work. I ended up getting one gem lettuce, one tomato and four fat slices of cucumber with a side of Hellmann's salad dressing in about 2 minutes of ordering. Then another good 10 minutes for the cheese plate. Then --a Caesar salad! Apparently, even after discussing my order for a good 10 minutes straight, she somehow managed to put a Caesar salad though the till without putting it on my bill. I've told her that I've already got my side salad and I've never ordered a Caesar salad. She then left the food on my table and told me she'll find out if anyone else has ordered one so she can take it over to their table. However, there was no other order, so I'm currently going through an 18 pound meal I've paid exactly 9 pounds for. Absolutely awful place. The very short girl behind the bar yawning in the face of the customers and constantly looking like she was doing the customers a favour for being there. Elbow on the counter and holding her chin with her head between the taps like she was about to fall asleep behind the bar. After I’ve ordered a pint I’ve asked for a food menu and in a very rude way I was told that they were on the tables. The burger is overpriced, £12 for a bacon, cheese and bland taste single patty probably defrosted in a microwave. The fast food next door serves probably better quality of meat. The place has the toilet out of order at the moment or they simply the staff wants to avoid cleaning it at the end of the shifts, relying on the station’s one which is circa 100 meters away. Firstly I’ve asked about the toilet and I was told “we don’t have a toilet”, just when I pointed out with another girl behind the bar that a place like that shouldn’t be open without a toilet facility I was told that it was broken for a long time “we can open as there’s the one in the station”. So bear that in mind before ordering a drink or some food. when I asked to speak with a manager to clarify this unacceptable situation I was told the manager wasn’t working that day. Clearly a lie as a saw a manager behind the bar serving different customers when I was there to order that disgrace...

Staff friendly, but not welcoming. I ordered the Cheesy Rarebit Chips off the "Sides" menu along with the Jalapeno Roulette odd the "Bites" menu... these were no season at all.. just Jalapeno peppers deep fried with a side of Ranch dressing- which was anything but Ranch.. The Chips were better- but the bartender told me they were "Excellent" which compelled me to want to order them even more than I already did, but goodness what a let down. I could make far better bar food at home and I am no cook! They do have a variety of ales and others but most of them were out and not available. I settled for a Guinness, which never fails to disappoint. I will say they have many charging docs for your phones which is nice if needed!

PS I also did grab some wasabi peas on my leaving and those were okay, M&S does them better and they were quite expensive.... I have seen this place for a long time as I always travel into Victoria, and thought it would be good...big let down....
