šĀ Euston šŗĀ Ā£5.21 Carlsberg
A Newish Spoons.
The Captain Flinders is located on busy Eversholt Street close to Euston train station. The nearest Tube is Euston which is just across the road.
This Spoons opened in January this year in the former SophistiCats strip club. The Captain Flinders is named in honor of the Royal Navy explorer Matthew Flinders, whose remains were discovered during archaeological work at the Euston station redevelopment. Matthew Flinders is renowned for leading the first circumnavigation of Australia from 1801 to 1803 and is credited with giving the country its name.
This is a compact one bar pub which feels small compared to your average Spoons. The left hand wall is tiled with photomosaics which Iāve not seen in a Spoons before. The rest of the walls are clad in wood panels with various pictures detailing the history of the area. At the rear of the bar is the servery which has a beautiful granite counter. A trip to a Spoons wouldnāt be complete without mentioning the carpet. The carpet has an eight pointed star which was the same detail on the great hall ceiling in the old Euston station.
The beer line up was a broad mix of mainstream beers, ciders, Guinness and four cask ales. I decided on a Carlsberg, my pint was on point, price point was just over a fiver. The food menu is a vast array of pub classics, burgers and comfort food, Fish & Chips costs £13.63 which includes an alcoholic drink, bargain!
I arrived around 4.30pm as the light was fading on a Saturday afternoon in January. The pub was absolutely packed with pretty much every seat taken. The punters were a mix of young and old, locals and day trippers, the pub had a lovely buzz about the place. The service was great, the chap who served me was welcoming and courteous.
It is always great to see a new pub opening, especially when so many are closing. Wetherspoonās pubs can divide opinion, I myself am a fan. They provide the local elder generation somewhere that is affordable and provides a social hub to spend time in.
The Captain Flinders, well worth a look.
