I’ve always relied on Avanti West Coast, and their services to and from London Euston don't disappoint. In my experience it’s always been an efficient, friendly, and comfortable journey.
It’s hard to find any negatives, but my only piece of advice would be to provide fair warning when water taps aren’t working in the toilets on trains.
I was on the 9.45 train from Stockport to London Euston which had just cleared Nuneaton when I went to use the toilet. After completing what I set out to do, I closed the seat, cleared the area of loose squares of paper, flushed, and applied a healthy portion of soap in the traditional manner - only to discover there was no water. My hands were covered in soap and the feeling was clammy and uncomfortable, even after four subsequent paper towels.
When I returned to the table seat I was sharing with my wife, it led to an unfortunate conversation where she questioned why my hands were so greasy. I explained to her this was because of soap and even six paper towels weren’t enough, and she replied asking why I had used so much soap in the first place, because she felt the consistency of my hands didn’t ‘feel right’. I tried hard to keep my voice down for the benefit of other passengers and asked her ‘what kind of consistency do you expect it to be, soap is soap’ but this didn’t diffuse the situation and led to an argument about why I can never clean myself properly, and how it was a terrible example to set for my son, Rupert, who fortunately wasn’t present.
It was an embarrasing situation for myself and the young couple we shared a table with - I noticed a distinct change in their body language, and then they started saying things like ‘oh my god’ and ‘that’s gross’. Our argument was then misheard by someone sitting a few rows away, who had no right getting involved, and he made some very unpleasant statements about how that kind of behaviour ‘wasn’t appropriate on a train’, and that I was a ‘disgrace’ and a ‘slimy hand pervert’.
A couple of others in the carriage then started to film us, and without chance to explain the misunderstanding I tried to cover my face with my hand to stop my identity being exposed out of context online. Unfortunately because of the volume of soap I used, a large amount got in my eyes. The only way to calm the rest of the carriage down was to get off early at Milton Keynes, which was inconvenient as I had to take myself to a local McDonalds to find some napkins and rinse my eyes, and then to wait a further thirty minutes for the next onward train - causing me to arrive at London Euston an hour and a half later than planned, and without my wife, who stayed on the first train.
I would appreciate out-of-order signage being clearly marked in future. I’m pleased to report the second train did have a working tap and I haven’t encountered the...
Read moreWent to visit family in London and had a great time. The journey from Manchester Piccadilly station to London Euston train station was nice and a relaxing journey. The London Euston station was busy as usual and yet was easy to get around the place and had many stores to go to look and shop around. There’s coffee shops and restaurants such as Burger King. The small issue was that there was not many places to sit and wait around for your train and when you have children then it becomes an issue as you have to wait around, especially if there is a delay in your train arriving as we had to wait, although it wasn’t long which was about 15 minutes which you cannot fault the train but standing around in a packed station with children seems longer. Another issue I would say is that you only get to know your gate number for you to get your train was about 5 minutes before the train arrives to depart as which for families and people of need could have issues getting their train on time but then I am not sure if all the trains like this but it isn’t the first time this has happened with me. The station was very clean as well as the bathroom area and it is very easy to connect from the underground station to the train station as well as many places in London. The overall experience was good and this station is great but there is room for improvement like anything else really. But as a London central station, I feel like it should be a little better than most stations in the UK like technologically it needs to be more advanced and especially for tourists who might struggle to get around the places for tourist attractions and it would be beneficial for many businesses as well for the people. It is also difficult to park around what being London but most places is pay to park if you get lucky to find parking spots. Health and safety is average...
Read moreIf it were possible to give zero stars ... Honestly, the worst major European station I've ever been to. This is the gateway to the rest of the UK? It's a joke, an utter embarrassment .
Where to start? The insufficient seating which are just a couple of rows of metal chairs chucked in a corner? The jam-packed concourse of passengers standing anxiously waiting for their train platform to be announced 5 minutes before departure? How do they not know what platform my train departing in 5 minutes, already 15 minutes late, is leaving from? Can you imagine any other situation where cancellations, delays, inexplicable last minute changes are at all acceptable? And yet we're so used to the sheer incompetence of our train systems that everyone just accepts the inadequacy with either a scowl or a despairing smile.
How about the new "charging and WiFi" area where not a single charger works? Why was I surprised, why would the brand new charging station actually have any working chargers, this is Euston, this is the UK, important practical things shouldn't be expected to work here. In fact, the only place I could find to charge my phone (that wouldn't require me buying overpriced food at any of the diners) was the pub 20 meters down the station.
How about the bathrooms, which are utterly disgusting and outdated. Not the cleaning staff's fault by the way, but they're just 40 year old bathrooms that look like they were only ever supposed to be temporary stop-gaps in the first place.
Hate hate hate this place, and thanks to the frequency of cancellations and delays, Ive spent far, far, far too many hours of my life sat cross legged on the cold marble floor of this hellhole, with my phone on extreme battery saver, gazing up in frustrated disbelief at the board of...
