I was early for my train and I didn't want to pay the upgrade to catch an earlier train home so the man at virgin trains told me about this pub. So I gave it a go and I was really pleased. I went in on my crutches and ordered a pint of cider, now there are loads of different beers, lagers and cider on draught as well as the usual stuff in bottles in the fridges behind the bar. As I was on crutches I asked the barman if he could bring me my pint to my outside table which he did no problem at all. While drinking my pint and watching the world go by I looked at the food menu and decided to have the ultimate fish and chips, this comes with peas, bread, pickled onion, curry sauce and tarter sauce. The barman brought this to me and my next pint as well, the food was very nice and so was the drink that I had some more and all the time the barman looked after me in bringing me the drink, even as the pub was getting a bit busier. Although the barmaid never served me she did ask if everything was OK and if I needed anything else, I found this to be good and whatever it was I needed nothing was too much for the 2 staff that were on duty. This was a really enjoyable experience and I will return there next time...
Read moreThe Royal George is clearly a very popular pub – loud, lively, and often packed, especially during peak hours. If you're after a traditional, bustling pub atmosphere, this place certainly delivers on that front. However, the noise level can make conversation difficult, so it's not the best choice for a relaxed catch-up with friends.
We visited as a group and ordered food for the whole table. Unfortunately, most of us were a bit disappointed. The burger patties were overcooked and dry, and some of the dishes took quite a long time to arrive. Cleanliness was also an issue; several tables, including ours, were left uncleared for too long and could have used more attentive wiping down between guests.
On the positive side, drinks were served quickly and were just fine.
Overall, The Royal George may be worth visiting for its lively atmosphere and classic pub vibe, but if you're looking for a good meal, there are certainly better...
Read moreI joined some friends on a Friday evening at this pub. About half an hour before closing time, stepped outside for a cigarette, leaving three out of four drinks on the table along with a hat and a backpack. Upon returning inside, we discovered the chairs stacked on top of the table, and our drinks, backpack, and hat missing. When I inquired at the bar, the staff claimed there was nothing left behind. Feeling frustrated, I insisted they double-check as there were some important items, although it was only my umbrella that I had left to hold the table. Eventually, they returned with the backpack, but I couldn't understand why none of the security personnel went out to verify if we were the owners of the drinks and belongings left behind. Given the small number of tables inside, it would have been easier to check rather than removing all our staff. I'm never stepping foot in that...
