I’ve been to this pub many times, so often, in fact, that the bartenders know me pretty well. I’m there almost every week (used to be every day 🙄), and for good reason.
Every time I pop in, I’m greeted with open arms. The conversations with the bartenders are always great, and I’ve never felt anything less than welcome. The staff are consistently on point, whether it's a quiet afternoon or a packed evening.
Every drink I’ve had here tastes exactly how it should: delicious and fresh. The lines are clearly well-maintained, the glasses are clean, and the beer always hits the mark. I’ve tried a good variety: lagers, ciders, spirits, bottled beers, and shots. No complaints at all (aside from me being a bit weak when it comes to shots 😅). I’m not much of a real ale drinker, so I haven’t tried those, but everything else has been spot-on.
Now, the toasties, no joke, are the best I’ve ever had. Not greasy, just the right amount of spice (shoutout to Ellen for nailing it for those of us who like spice but not too much), and the bread is perfectly crispy on the outside while still soft inside. If I could keep ordering them every day, I would.
As I mentioned earlier, the service is fantastic. Ellen, Jamie, Gigi, Onya (apologies if I butchered the spelling 🤦♂️), and Tony all make the experience even better. When I was working in the area, this was hands down my go-to spot.
They also host quiz nights every Monday, and you’ll want to book early because it fills up fast. Plus, the pub is one of the stops for HiddenCity’s James Bond Experience, basically a fun, interactive Easter egg hunt, so don’t be surprised if you see people wandering around with silver suitcases!
Just keep in mind, the pub isn't huge and a lot of people do come in and out but it won't hinder your experience no matter how busy it gets.
And prices are average for Central London, honestly, thinking about it, might be one of the few pubs nearby with decent prices for their food and drinks!
All in all, this place is perfect! Thanks to the...

An historic pub In an atmospheric setting.
The Devereux is hidden away in a small alleyway just off a quiet courtyard in Temple. The nearest Tube is Temple, it’s a five minute walk to get here.
This pub opened in 1677 as The Grecian Coffee House, this historic pub was the favourite haunt of various historical figures, including Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Edmund Halley and Hans Sloane. The Devereux is Grade II listed and was refurbished as a pub in 1843. The pub is named after Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex and a famous parliamentary general in the Civil War; his red bust adorns the facade above the pub’s sign.
This one bar pub is set out in an ‘L’ shape and feels quite dark inside due to the location and the lack of sunlight through the windows. There is lots of wood panelling, secluded booths and historical prints around the walls. The servery is a good size and can be accessed from all areas of the bar.
The beer selection was tidy and included familiar favourites, a couple of craft options plus cask ales from @portobellowbrewing .I chose a pint of Asahi, my pint was top notch, price point was average for this lager. There isn’t a food menu but you can get a Toastie for £5. There is a list of ingredients on a chalkboard, just simply choose what you want to go in your Toastie.
We arrived around 5.30pm on a pleasant Friday afternoon in September. The atmosphere was buzzy with a nice crowd of local office workers enjoying an end of week bevvie. We were joined by the one and only @booze_house_tales who is always great company and top pub enthusiast.
The pub hosts a Quiz on a Monday and is open seven days a week.
Sometimes it’s not the pub itself but the setting or location which makes for a great pub experience. The Devereux is a solid pub, however having a pint in the alleyway surrounded by the historic buildings was superb thing to do. I would definitely recommend a visit here.

Read moreThe Devereux – Hidden Charm Just Off the Strand We had a great time at The Devereux Pub — a proper London boozer tucked away in a quiet courtyard near Temple. It’s the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately want to stay awhile.
The atmosphere is cozy and traditional, with wood-panelled walls, friendly regulars, and a sense of history that gives it real character. The beer selection is solid — well-kept ales, crisp lagers, and a few rotating casks — and the prices are refreshingly reasonable for central London.
We enjoyed a few drinks with colleagues, played a board game from the shelf, and even tried one of their famous toasties. Nothing fancy, just good pub food done right.
Verdict: The Devereux is a hidden gem — relaxed, welcoming, and full of old-school charm. Perfect for a quiet pint, a casual catch-up, or escaping the bustle of the city for...
