The starters were nice, good variety and tasty. Everything was well cooked and the flavours were pretty well balanced. Lamb, pork, fish and prawns, all pretty unique, and worth ordering. The mackrel was a particularly highlight, however In hindsight we should've stopped here.
Given it was a Wednesday night it was an odd choice to only serve Sunday roasts for mains. Chicken and potatoes, beef and potatoes, or vegetarian dish ..and potatoes. This isn't 1940, and whilst i appreciate a well cooked small menu, this was not it.
The potatoes tasted odd, definitely not freshly boiled and roasted, they were what you might expect from a frozen bag of roast potatoes.
The beef slices were plated 10 minutes before the dinner was served (i saw them as i went to the bathroom). They were also pretty thin and whilst were quite nice they were reminiscent of a school cafeteria, not a £26 plate of food. The cabbage that had been slapped on the grill before serving had been boiled within an inch of its life beforehand.
Wine was nice, but given the quality of the mains we didn't want to hang around to try the dessert.
Over all pretty disappointing, would recommend...
Read moreWe stumbled upon the place after a typically frustrating swim at the Brittains Leisure Centre (see my review) and a short play in the scrutty (in more senses than one) Hoxton park.
We know of the brand from it’s lovely, if pricey butchers, but weren’t sure what to expect in terms of menu. It turned out to be wonderfully simple and offered a weekend deal of burgers, or chicken schnitzel, chips and salad, plus a drink, for a tenner a head.
I ordered gambas-style prawns and a Caesar salad- about £18, plus a pleasant glass of white, and some bread on the side to mop up the delicious sauce.
Put it this way, we were exceptionally well fed for a decent sum, the service was excellent, friendly and fast- I’m just surprised it wasn’t busier for a bank holiday weekend Sunday, but Hoxton St is one of those places that comes alive on weekdays. Nonetheless a great little find, and one that makes the stress of taking the family to the Britannia pool (once you factor parking, ostentatiously complex pool regulations and the general malaise of all Better (than nothing!) Leisure Centres...
Read moreI have a mixed opinion after our visit to The Ginger Pig. We didn't have to wait for a table as there are no bookings and waitress was quick to take our drink order - tap water is supplied at no charge. The menu on our visit was brunch which was not what we were told over the phone (told that the lunch menu would also be available) and not what was advertised on the internet. I opted for the salmon which was lovely, served with lots of scrambled egg but merely 1 slice of sour dough. The volume of food (and price) warranted at least 2. All in all however a nice dish. My friends opted for the half monty and this is where it all went wrong. The food arrived barley warm - sausages were sent back. The portion was small and did not live up to any English breakfast standard. Again 1 slice of toast. Very disappointing. The boys left hungry which is NOT a good start...
